I don't have much respect for mine, really none. I'm just curious how other DU'ers feel about theirs ...

(4,340 posts)Yeah, there are pockets of liberalism and progressivism in Texas, but the vast majority is not. I'm Texan, born and raised, and I have no problems with deriding Texas for what it is.

(9,748 posts)I just wish that at some point in the tax debate he could have made the simple statement:
Of the 42 states with a state income tax Illinois has the drop dead lowest top marginal rate. Not "one of" the lowest. But "the" lowest in the entire country.
I know I changed quite a few minds on the tax increase by sharing that little tidbit. Pissed off a few righties too who vowed to look it up and prove me wrong. Oddly, as much as they spin shit about everything, none of them managed to come up with anything on this topic.
For that matter, he should use that point right now while neighboring governors are running around claiming they will steal our businesses. He could easily point out that for years we had the lowest taxes, yet you didn't see all of their businesses running to Illinois. So methinks all your bluster is just that, nothing but talk.
He governs well, but rather sucks at politics.

(13,071 posts)She decided not to run for another term. The economic troubles in WA, like many states, were difficult to address.
I think she became disillusioned when she asked for a tax hike for pop and candy and the voters turned it down after everyone complained about wanting the same service--but apparently did not want to pay for them.
The stimulus helped WA until the Republicans successfully nixed money to states. (In their effort to gain back the power they lost when they stole our treasury and distracted us by sending our middle class to war--but I digress).
Rob McKenna, the current republican attorney general is running against Democrat Jay Inslee.
You may recall that McKenna is one who joined with other right-wing governors to file suit against the health reform law. Gregoire was pissed...the issue went to the state supreme court, with Gregoire arguing that McKenna is the state's attorney and, like any attorney, cannot simply file suits on behalf of a client without the client's permission. McKenna actually won that legal battle.
The election is close with both currently nearly tied.

(12,041 posts)I am from Minnesota and our Governor Mark Dayton has to be one of the best governors in the nation. I don't always agree with him, but I know from personal experience he has a really big heart. One of my friends worked on his campaign and just three days before the primary election a drunk driver hit her car head on and both her and her boyfriend at the time were very seriously injured. Mark Dayton was up at the hospital for hours to be by her family's side despite the fact that it was a crucial point in the campaign. He did not try to make a campaign issue out of the help he was giving her family, he could have exploited the situation for votes but he chose not to. Instead he very quietly gave the family enormous support even though it was an extremely busy and crucial moment in the campaign he chose to support my friends in their most difficult time, for that he will always have my respect and support.
