Cruz: Only rich people in Manhattan and San Francisco will see higher taxes

BY JOSH DELK - 12/20/17 09:47 AM EST

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said Wednesday that the only Americans who will see a tax hike under the GOP's sweeping tax overhaul will be the rich in Manhattan and San Francisco.

"The only people whose taxes are going up are the really rich. Every taxpayer, their taxes are going down, except rich people in Manhattan and San Francisco, some of them, their taxes may go up," Cruz said on the Senate floor early Wednesday morning.

The GOP plan, which passed the Senate by a 51-48 vote early Wednesday, would roughly double the standard deduction for single filers and married couples. Republicans have characterized their plan as a boon for the middle class.

High earners in areas with high state and local taxes may not be able to deduct as much under plan, however, and could pay more overall.

to cover this. We're already near full employment and I'd be amazed to see any economic benefit at all to this tax grab.

Of course, rich people in Texas will be just fine. They are his Republican base.

Need earmuffs for these factory whistles.

I was actually surprised to learn long ago that Cruz is a genuine religious conservative. He's so intensely scummy, no resemblance to our good religious neighbors.

But psychologists have identified a real type who are intensely religious but seem to think they themselves get a pass from "god" and are among the worst breakers of rules they preach for others. Explains him, I guess.

He just pretended to fight to retain a tax break for home schoolers, many of whom are very religious of course, but it added up to his typical lying betrayal that he'll use again against those who can be fooled all the time.

Keep on stoking that sick lie that the “costal elites” are the ones taking your money. Meanwhile, the “heartland” sucks at the teet of the government funded by those costal elites.

Wealthy Texans will be hit, as well as others who have expensive property

I can tell you for a fact that rates in some places are much higher than that map suggests. It is common for property tax rates in Savannah to be near 2% of house value. And Georgia has a significant state income tax as well.

And of course poor people will be nailed bt this as well, if not next year, for certain in a few.

Is his head getting bigger? I'm not talking about his ego... I mean LITERALLY! Is his cranium getting larger? Or are his shoulders shrinking? Or is he wearing a suit that's the wrong size?

He's such a bizarrely proportioned man. He's a total caricature with his exaggerated and disproportionate and odd features.

It's difficult to listen to him for many reasons, but mostly because I can only focus on what a strange-looking man he is.

(Oh stop it! I know! It's "not nice" to make fun of someone's appearance. I'm willing to make an exception for these clowns.)

property taxes? I thought the property taxes were high to make up for not having income taxes. If they are high, won't some high-income Texans be losing some of their deduction?
