Despise and distrust the Russian state. Xi is an empire builder to be sure and pragmatism may lead to a short-term agreement to act in mutual benefit, but the internal contradictions cannot be resolved without Russia making concessions it simply cannot accept.

Russia hates US run NATO and its expansion and China wants to push us out of the pacific back to Hawaii.
I think China is succeeding extremely well. Russia moved up its game by the cyber attacks on our election. Sure it’s a marriage of convenience but orange Nero has made it very convenient.

Goals in Asia, but China is also well aware that Russia is a declining state and it will only be a matter of time before it turns on Russia to demand a redress of the concessions forced on China by the unequal treaties.

But you are right, Putin and Russia have some baggage as well as the issues you mention. And then China could move on.

I think they may have some conflict over Africa as well. China is heavily invested there and Russia I think wants in.

it totally clueless. Couldn't lead his way out of a paper bag. The US had a good run of it after WWII with no real competition, but has been backsliding for sometime now. And often the US is its own worst enemy with all of the fighting in this country. And, the fact that a damn fool like Trump could ascend to the presidency is very telling. And, we have the GOP that wants to bury most of the country. It's a damn poor recipe for success.

And we are a violent, racist society, with a lower standard of living than the other industrialized countries. Young people cannot afford an education.
Lack of a secure voting system, gerrymandering and rigged elections (Gore/Bush).
Starting an illegal war, with torture. All makes for a very poor role model.
And yes, Trump is the frosting on the cake of decline.

and often it was just taking advantage of them. Today, I don't think I would have those opportunities as a youth, and that is very sad. I view the US of today as an example of the worst parts of capitalism, unregulated, and many climbing over each other with greed and one-upmanship. It's just often not a pleasant place.

We could afford to go to college for example. My daughter is looking at graduate schools now and costs are running about $80K a year. Unreal. School debt will preclude buying a house, car or starting a family for quite some time after graduation.

I think unregulated capitalism has ruined the American dream. We have turned the country over to the 1%.
