The winter solstice also known as Yule, Midwinter, the Shortest Day of the Year and the Longest Night occurs at 11:28 a.m. ET Thursday.
But this short, little day with the great many names also may be the worst day of the year, according to astrologers. The reason? Saturn.
Apparently, the sun will appear to pass in front of the constellation Capricorn hours after Saturn does likewise. This will cause both of these orbs to line up for the first time time since 1664, according to London astrologer Neil Spencer, who writes for The (London) Observer but first wrote about the alignment on his blog.
He insists that starting something new on this day is ill advised and will have long-term consequences. And anything you try to do Thursday will be more difficult than usual, take more time and be more frustrating.

At this time, a friend shall lose his friend's hammer and the young shall not know where lieth the things possessed by their fathers that their fathers put there only just the night before, about eight o'clock."

(12,157 posts)I rode 20 miles with my cycling friends on a Solstice day ride. True they went on for lots more miles without me, but it was great after not riding for a month (hernia surgery). I was happy to find I still have legs.
BTW if I felt the tilt it would've made the down hills uphill.

(7,678 posts)Also, the fireplace fire caught on the first attempt, I made migas for the first time in 10 years and they were delicious, and it's sunny outside for the first time this week.
What am I missing...?

(15,064 posts)It reminds me of the current relatively new evengelical fad The Bible Code. It predicts things could happen but when it doesn't happen it is interpreted in a different way. Astrology is an ancient belief conceived because people at that time could not understand science or the universe.
It was also a form of control. Kings had astrologers who instructed them to make decisions based on the alignment of the stars.

(15,064 posts)changed so much since astrology was conceived there is no telling what I am. You could name any sign and there would be associated human tendencies I would agree that are a part of me.

(8,636 posts).....we celebrate Christmas in December because it coincides with the Pagan celebration of the Winter Solstice. The person now known to history as Jesus of Nazareth was probably born in the spring. The priests of the White Christ appropriated many of the old pagan holidays......and there's nothing really wrong with that.
I have a wonderful friend, a devout Episcopalian, who truly blew my mind when she declared "I'm more a pagan than a Christian." One of her Facebook post was devoted to a service she found particularly moving, she said: "Have a Blessed Day" and added "Blessed Be, which is, of course, the Pagan Blessing.
Have a Blessed Holiday Season, and Blessed Be!

(3,208 posts)maybe this explains why my grandsons and I were not able to finish the third book in the Harry Potter series yesterday! I thought for sure we would get it done, but they ask a lot of questions (always good to pause reading for that) and then we had to leave to go somewhere when we were halfway through the last chapter.
(We did get it finished today, though!)
