UN Votes to Censure US for Jerusalem Move After Haley Hints at Cutting Aid
The UN draft resolution says Jerusalem "is a final status issue" and reaffirms 10 Security Council resolutions on Jerusalem, dating back to 1967, including requirements that the city's final status must be decided in negotiations
The United Nations General Assembly voted 128-9, with 35 abstentions, Thursday to declare the United States' recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital "null and void."
The vote rebuking the U.S. came despite Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley having hinted that the U.S. could pull funding from the U.N. over the vote calling on President Donald Trump to rescind his decision.
Thursday's vote on the non-binding resolution, while a victory for the Palestinians, was significantly lower than its supporters had hoped for, with many forecasting at least 150 "yes" votes. Adding to the 35 abstentions were 21 countries marked absent.
On Thursday, Haley made the U.S.'s sharpest threat about the United Stations yet, invoking the funding it provides to the U.N.
