Abigail Disney is an heiress with brass ovaries

who will profit from the GOP tax scam bill but isn’t into f-cking poor people over. Ms. Disney penned an op-ed for USA Today in which she rips the GOP a new one because she has “always been cognizant of income and wealth inequality.” In other words, she is not Donald Trump, Paul Ryan or Bob Corker. Or Mitch McConnell. She is Abigail Disney, dammit.

Disney’s impact on copyright laws should be criminal. That the majority of Disney’s most popular stories, from Cinderella to Snow White and everything in-between, are a simple retelling of older folk tales and such, many pulled directly from collections of the Grimm Brothers fairytales, that they got royalty free, even having already made millions from merchandise and movies, Disney continues to charge outrageous fees to use them for high school plays as well as requiring the scripts to only be done in certain ways, is criminal (say the word “Disney” to any HS drama teacher and they are likely to explode into a cussing fit).

The “Mouse” can kiss my ass.

No different than the Kochs.

The Kochs fund hospitals and medical research and have huge charitable organizations but I am never going to praise them for it.

Unless she is using her influence to make fundamental changes at her namesake, from how they treat their park employees and actors to opening up royalty-free use of plays based on their movies (that they got though public domain royalty free), than it is no different than the nice things the Kochs do.

My empathy for the super-wealthy died the night of the republicans trillion dollar giveaway.

Seems a rather relevant thing to research prior to going into an melodramatic rant. But as it's inconvenient to do so and often interferes with our biases, I can certainly understand your lack of doing so.

My empathy for logical fallacies, laziness of research and knee-jerk reasons never died... as it never existed in the first place.

Some rich people are actually good human beings. Somewhere in the Koch family there is likely one or two virulently opposed to their uncles. If one of those Kochs came to work with you for good outcomes, you would turn them away simply because of the family that the person come from. How much more short-sighted can a person be? Honestly, if the child of Satan came to me to honestly work for good and against the actions of his or her father, I would welcome the help.

Fri Dec 22, 2017, 10:27 AM

the prices would drop. Nobody is forcing the high school to do Beauty and the Beast or Cinderella. If they want more kid friendly stuff, there is Into the Woods, Shrek the Musical or Seussical the Musical and probably more; if they want more mature stuff, there are plenty of options - older classics like West Side Story, 42nd Street, etc to more recent ones like Hairspray, Addams Family or In the Heights.

But, if a local high school puts on Seussical and gets 1,200 seats sold at $10 each for 3 shows in total, they make $12,000 in box office. If Beauty and the Beast sells 1,500 tickets at $10/each, they make $15,000 in box office (an extra 100 seats per show). Does the extra $3,000 justify the increased price?

More about her...

"Last year, when Meryl Streep publicly accused Walt of being a "bigot," his grandniece took to her Facebook page to voice how she "loved" the actress' remarks. "Anti-Semite? Check." Disney wrote. "Misogynist? OF COURSE!! Racist? C'mon…

The fear of being judged for her name is also what kept Disney away from filmmaking for so long. After earning three degrees — a bachelor's from Yale University, master's from Stanford University and a doctorate from Columbia — she worked largely as a philanthropist, launching nonprofits to fight poverty and encourage global peace building.

"I’ve given away about a third of my net worth, although it has come back to me as quickly as I’ve given it away. I’ve started making million dollar grants payable over four to five years.

But bolder giving isn’t just about grant size; it’s about being out in the world and working with other people. I’m a far richer person because of it."

It’s the difference between a Beauty and the Beast people recognize and one that looks familiar.

Even those productions can be cost prohibitive to purchase the rights to do it. Especially if you are not a very big school. I know that Drana departments are always way overfunded so they always have thousands of extra dollars to spend on a single production.

Belle, Gaston, or Lefou, or anthropomorphic furniture/household items then you are gonna have copyright problems, because Disney owns those characters. They are NOT in the original fairytale.

If you want to do a stage production of Beauty and the Beast and base it on the actual French fairy tale, then you'll have no problems whatsoever.

for free, recycling any of the Grimm's fairy tales because they're hundreds of years old. All works published since 1922 are in the public domain. Do you read German? That will help.

But you can't simply take Disney's work (a highly sanitized and Americanized version of the oral stories) and use that for free -- except for any stories that are past the copyright date.
