AT&T will lay off 280 Dallas employees as it discontinues a credit and collections center and "premium care center" in early 2018.

In an email to the Dallas Business Journal, AT&T spokesperson Marty Richter said that the company is consolidating the call center work into other U.S. facilities. Employees will be given the opportunity to relocate to San Antonio or Earth City, Missouri, with a relocation allowance.

He added that work volumes have been decreasing at the centers due to technological improvements and customers preferences to communicate online rather than over the phone.

Richter said AT&T hired about 3,700 people in Texas in 2016 and has added another 2,400 employees in the state this year, as of November.
