Perfect example of brainwashing over years.

We'll never win over the Trump supporters who have had their brains sent through a wash and spin cycle because they don't see what's before their eyes. At 64 I have friends who have changed from McGovern voting hippies of the '60s into what would have qualified them as John Birch Society members back in the day.

Bear with me, I have to get this off my chest.

I often ask these friends what happened to make them change so dramatically, but they insist they always felt like they do now, that instead it's the politics that have moved too far to the left beneath their feet. I understand how friends who are bigoted self centered assholes support Donald Trump because they see a little of themselves in him, but many just willfully believe the opposite of the truth.

A perfect example is my old friend LJ. He was in a band I was associated with back then and he sends a monthly update to all of us in an email. He has also become deeply religious in his old age BTW. While I see Trump as a womanizing perpetual liar who hasn't been in a church since his daughter was married, he sees a man who walks hand in hand with God. I see a man who works with his cabinet of Goldman Sachs alumni to grease the wheels for Wall Street, he sees a stalwart protector against the "globalist bankers". I know for a fact Trump opposes any regulation against industry, he often says so. But LJ believes he's working tirelessly to clean the environment and assure food safety. I don't get it, but he tells me I've been brainwashed by the liberal media, unlike him who ignores the fake news and focuses on the infinite truth of Alex Jones.

Though his missives read like a comedy of errors, we will never convince the millions like LJ who have been hypnotized to see what isn't really there. Here's the latest email from former Freeman Sound drummer LJ:

Personally, with the spirit of the old anti-establishment Freeman Sound sentiment, I'm cheering on Trump's seemingly sincere, God and country focused efforts, as he has pledged to stand against the globalist corporate banking criminal network, which has worked through the democratic party and it's liberal agenda in an effort to tear down and take over the country. Seems maybe half of the republicans had been bribed or blackmailed into submission to these evil, perverted people as well, so with the globalist controlled mainstream media spouting its propaganda, we've been looking like '60s communist Russia, with the gov controlled radio and TV and all its perfectly impeccable robot talking heads promoting some fantasy realm reality for the masses.

The battle for the total liberation of the US from the clutches of these Luciferian / Satanic globalist types continues. They have fooled many into thinking they want a marvelous, technological world, but really, they want to rid the earth of about 2/3 of us common people, through poisoned or genetically modified food, polluted air and water, disease, radiation, and who knows what else. I told people for years that globalist Obie was encouraging the invasion of the US by Mexican drug gangs and Muslims, using crazy people to do horrible things to intimidate the masses and induce paranoia, and we've continued to see the results of it. If you want to see how the globalists want the US to look, look at what's going on in Europe, right now, if you aren't afraid to look into the real news offered by independent media.

Of course LJ doesn't want to discuss politics:

But this is supposed to be about "sound", so I'll not continue with the politics. But it's a shame if any of my peers that sympathized with the spirit of the late '60s anti-establishment movement doesn't realize that the whole idea of that "liberal" movement was hijacked in the '70s, twisted around and used to exploit the sympathies of minorities and caring people, to promote the take down of our country by the globalist establishment, the majority of the European and American "elite", ever since.

He didn't change from the days of peace, love, and protest, I have. Got it.

Your post, JohnnyRingo, really hit home. I've been dealing with just this problem with a friend. We used to email back and forth, sometimes many times per day. But just before the election, I found out he'd been hiding a bit of a secret....he's a Trump supporter and a Fox News watcher and has little time for any other news source. When T won....I was so shocked and horrified, I didn't contact him for a while. Then I kept getting those emails asking where I've gone? What's up? Etc. I explained my horror....he said politics shouldn't enter our friendship and he could still be friends with me even though I voted Hillary. Why can't I ignore his vote and support for T? Well, I lost 98% of the respect I have for him as a person, a friend and as an American. But how to say that? I finally sort of did. But his reply still gets to me, how do I answer???? Here's why he supported T:

"I am a logical, realistic person, and it is simply not logical and/or realistic to:

1. Allow illegals free access into our country.
2. Give "free" Healthcare to everyone in this country, especially considering item 1.
3. Ban firearms in a country where they are Constitutionally protected ( equal to Free Speech )
4. Allow heterosexuals' rights to be diminished in favor of those who think they are the opposite of what biological science proves them to be.

These are just a few of the issues/causes that many on the Left support, and T does not, which is why I voted for him. I did not vote for him because of his eloquence, charm or a host of flaws that is obvious to all. There are, in fact, MANY issues that I disagree with him: his stance on unions and the environment come to mind immediately. However, in the most IMPORTANT issues TO ME, we are in agreement. And the Progressive Left is not."

I can't stay in contact with someone I don't respect....this sucks!!!!! Gee, thanks T for ruining so dang MUCH in all our lives!!!

...you really shouldn't let politics come between you and friends. I get it, but I came here to rant about LJ because I didn't want to reply to his inane email. As it turns out, he posted on his Facebook that he was surprised so many of his friends have fallen for the liberal propaganda, so he apparently he got a lot of unexpected negative feedback on his mailing. I'm glad now I didn't respond. He's so deluded he thinks we're all under the spell of what he calls "Saul Alinski's opposite game", a phrase I think he made up to explain why we all see things the opposite of what the facts really are.

I know he's had mental problems in the past. For instance, a few years ago his emails were like a cry for help because of mounting health problems with no insurance. He was so depressed I was afraid he would off himself so I reached out to others to intervene. Since he's dirt poor I myself suggested he sign up for Obamacare. You can imagine how that went over. Now he's finally on Medicare, so it's not like he's sucking at the govt teat or falling for the global elitist plan to kill him with free healthcare. Faceplant.

At least your friend has some connection with reality by mentioning Trump's shortcomings, though I don't understand how such obvious flaws didn't disqualify him from a vote. Millions like LJ don't see anything at all wrong with Trump and think it's a persona that was wholly invented by the media. They actually don't know he demeans women, showers banking institutions with gifts, or deregulates polluters. LJ honestly believes Trump prays every day to God and asks how he can help the working man, then puts it to action.

Still, I think you should consider biting your tongue and maintain some kind of fragile relationship. Hard as it is, people do change, and it's not worth throwing away years. Someday your friend will suffer from decisions being made today, and it's too late to blame Obama. I do wonder how giving gay people rights takes anything away from heterosexuals though. I didn't know I was suffering because gay people had cake at their wedding. hahaha

I appreciate the reply JR....well said and as I thought. I don't know if I can continue to hang out with the guy though. But I'll try, yet again! I just wish I had the brain power and the fact vault to have a legitimate debate on his talking points. I just get flustered and am too dumbfounded to handle the idiocy. LOL

Thanks again and happy new year to you and yours!
