I understand that under the R budget already passed by the house, Medicaid will not cover nursing home care for people like my mom.

(4,253 posts)Nursing home care is so hard to get and expensive. It should not be this way.

(10,602 posts)The GOP supports the idea that the offspring of the family member in a nursing home be responsible for that debt after the person passes. That means they support allowing the individual states putting a liens on your house and other assets as well as garnishing your wages until the debt is paid. Also when a person goes into a nursing home under Medicaid any assets they have will have to be sold and the money given to the state. So if a person on Medicaid owns a house the state can immediately file a lien on it collectible after the parent's death.
Before Medicaid family members had to pay a certain amount of money based on their income for nursing home care. Such was the case if the parent could not afford long term care. The federal mandate under Medicaid stopped the states from taking the property of the offspring or requiring them to pay the state for care.
Most Americans do not understand that if Medicaid is abolished or is devolved to the states, they theoretically can take your house to pay for the care if you are a surviving child.
The reason that I know that this is true is that my grandmother went into a nursing home before Medicaid. My mom's three sisters were forced to help pay for her care by the state of Illinois. My mom was NOT in state at the time so she could not be assessed.

(131,107 posts)No idea about the R budget, but wouldn't be surprised.
Is your mother able to walk around? Such is useful, to avoid pneumonia.
Best of luck.

(8,933 posts)I didn't realize this about medicaid. Here they have a spend down thing and basically they take your assets. The idea that they could go after someone's kids! When my dad died, he had a car and a couple bikes. He had enough life insurance to bury him and to put a headstone up for him and my mom and my sister. I wish people would take the time to think about things and look beyond faux news.
Just hope for a quick recovery for your mom.

I remember back when some R-asshole was promoting the idea of a $2,000 co-pay for Medicare. Some of my friends who vote R have elderly parents who simply can't afford it. I tell them "Well, then, you can pony up the money, can't you?" When they start to sputter, I say "But, but Republicans want people to take personal responsibility! Aren't you in favor of that?"
Then I shut up to hear the crickets...
