I'm not saying that's a cause, I'm saying it's a troubling symptom.

So what? This is fantasy violence we're speaking of. Not especially troubling.
Recursion
(56,582 posts)It is to me.
First of all, the body counts in Batman are from bad people, we are told it's bad to kill through Batman because Batman never kills and won't use guns.
Second of all, it's a movie. Should we not show war movies because it involves people killing other people?

(28,876 posts)If media saturation inures us to it, then what?
We just watch it and numb out.
But if we are sensitive to it and it bothers us,
then what?
Me: I avoid it.

(4,281 posts)Yes there were likely plenty of children and soldiers' wives living on that station (basically a flying military base). He also attacked his own government. He's not a terrorist?

That, to me, kind of disrespects the real horror of what happened.

Its sole reason for existing, it seems, is to keep a running tally of the body counts in Hollywood films. It has no particular agenda, nor does it appear to cover anything else. It just tallies up body counts. I have no idea why such a site needs to exist, but Im not really averse to it. Just kind of perplexed. Maybe its a handy reference tool for homicidal psychopaths trying to quell their thirst through Netflix.

(56,582 posts)They don't have to *die* on screen, but they have to either appear dead on screen or appear alive on screen and then be killed offscreen.
though Private Ryan should be high on the list too. It was Normandy!
Nye Bevan
(25,406 posts)so the body count would be in the millions. So why isn't that on the list?

(30,151 posts)Or I will for you
Simple Guideline...
- Can you see a dead body plainly? count it
- Can you see a mortal hit? count it
- Did someone die on screen? count it
- Was a scene shown and then at the last second "cut away?" count it
- Use an offically released director's, extended, or unrated cut of a film over theatrical releases. No bootleg/leaked versions please.
- Only count wide and limited released films (US, Worldwide, or native country). No TV movies, shows, or straight to DVD/video!!!
- Anything else is extra and/or misc. (planes, ships, houses, planets...) and is really only for fun but not necessary.

(56,582 posts)Also, it's pretty safe to be that if there's data that can be tabulated, there's a website dedicated to tabulating it. Hell, I run a website that tabulates pitch counts in minor league baseball games.
And I'm pretty sure all 8 remaining Nazguls die.

Yes, all the Nazgul die (to the extent that they were alive in the first place), along with Sauron.

(37,573 posts)I had an urge to destroy the DVD. Unfortunately I didn't file the right form, so I could not get authorization.
I did notice, that like "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban", that the movie was made to be more violent than the book. In other movie to book conversion in the past, like "That was then, this is now" and others, that the movies added more sex to the story.
But that was then, when sex sold, and this is now, when violence does.

(14,061 posts)I've read through this thread and I'm still not sure what point is trying to be made. Seems to me that what it's complaining about is the very mindset that had people in the theater last Friday.
I don't go for these types of movies, but as long as they're turning a profit for the studios they'll continue to be made. When society sends the message that enough is enough, things will change.
It's a hard fact of life, but everything to some degree is affected by the bottom line. Flame away, folks, but facts are facts.

(1,418 posts)I don't buy movies/video games are inspiring this violence. that's too convenient.
however, I do think the movie industry needs to rethink their "need" for big, hyped midnight
movie premiers... which provide a venue for real "Jokers" to carry out their wacked perfomances

(6,238 posts)I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks media causes these kinds of things is looking for an easy answer. There are problems in our society that go much deeper than violence in art. We should address those problems, not waste our time with moral panics. Let's discuss having better access to mental healthcare for one. That would probably do a lot more than complaining about violence in movies.

(9,988 posts)Yes, there are lots of movies where lots of actors pretend to die. Your point is?
My point is that it's really, really indescribably messed up to compare fictional deaths of fictional characters to real people, who died violently for real, and did NOT get up, wash the makeup off, and go on to the next role.
