I know the NCAA says children causes but honestly - that money should go to all the victims of this wretched crime.

(52,317 posts)i don't disagree with you in an ideal world, or perhaps if the ncaa collected it and kept it on ice somehow until after the legal system had run its course.
and i'm sure there were many victims who don't have witnesses or concrete evidence who would be left out anyway.

(103,856 posts)so ultimately, little or nothing will ever get to victims.
This is the unfortunate part of "fines".. Fines get paid to people who will then get to pick and choose who gets compensation, and who does not..
The 60 million should have been divided between the Penn State area victims who were brave enough to come forward...not "given" to nationwide organizations. Ongoing, the college should have been required to perhaps donate a portion of profits (will there even be any for a while?) to those organizations, but the 60Million fine should have gone to the victim..

(3,069 posts)That is what the article I read said. I had the same first impression as you, but now I think that the 60 million to organizations is a good thing. The victims of Sandusky will get their money via separate lawsuits, so really PSU is going to pay much, much more.
On edit... I do wish the endowment was for PA/regional charities, rather than national. I didn't realize they were national organizations.
This is a good point.
The university will reach settlements with each of the victims, plus contribute separately to fund programs for child sexual abuse. In those circumstances I'm okay with the penalty.

(25,704 posts)Someone will have to be hired to administer it. That gives someone a chance to hire their lazy brother-in-law for a six figure job.

(14,061 posts)Because it is as much of the problem in collegiate sports as the schools themselves.
I'll be interested to see how this plays out, as well as seeing an accounting of where this money went and how it was spent.
