Most likely, he will not do what many expect or hope. I think he'll step out of public view for a while and write a book.
He has received a massive insult from people who should have stood with him. I think he'll consider that insult and turn it around into something productive.
I can't say for sure, but that's what I think. We should not expect public statements from Franken. Not right away. He's not probably going to become a voice for anyone. He's probably going to bide his time, let the pain dissipate, and turn his fine sense of satirical wit to making it clear what a mistake we are now making.
Sorry, Al. Maybe I'll run into you one day soon. I'm on your side, and so are a lot of other people. It sucks being the one chosen to take the fall. I'm sorry it was you.

(115,829 posts)there are a lot of people whose hair is on fire about how dangerous Trump is. I expect to see him soon, up on the ramparts with a torch and a pitchfork. He could easily land a media gig somewhere.

(146,325 posts)I just don't know. He'd be justified in walking away and saying nothing at all. I doubt he'll do that, but this is not a trivial thing to have happen to anyone. Not in any way. Al Franken was very proud to be serving the people of Minnesota in the Senate. I'm sure it was a true high point of achievement in his life. The sense of betrayal must be intense.
It's been a depressing event for me.

(146,325 posts)I'd love to have a talk with him, but I don't know him well enough to suggest such a thing.
I don't know if he was blind-sided or not, really. If so, it will be a tough blow to overcome. Betrayal by those you think are your friends and allies is a terrible thing.
I think he was unceremoniously dumped by people for whom politics is more important than actual public good. They saw some advantage in getting rid of Franken to quiet certain voices. Franken may not even have anticipated what happened. I'm not sure.
Anyhow, I hope he weathers this all OK. I emailed him a while back.

(146,325 posts)I don't think he'll ever seek office again. He'd be a fool to do that. He has learned something very important, I'm sure. And it's not a positive lesson about public service, either.

(3,515 posts)He will show us all the hypocrisy, the lying and the corruption. That's what he has always done, and I expect that is what he will do in the future.
And I, for one, will be eagerly waiting to find out what he has to say.

(10,171 posts)It would be an important voice but he would not be close to the snakes in Washington who "assassinated" him for being an honest man.

(146,325 posts)Betrayal sucks. It truly does.
It's over. Tina Smith will be our Senator, at least for a while. She's a good person, and will vote with other Democrats. She is not, however, the kind of voice that Al Franken has been. You're not going to hear from her much this year.

(16,189 posts)Which is a decision made easier by the massive damage the tax bill is going to inflict on me.
But in addition to feeling angry at the colleagues who betrayed him, I feel somewhat abandoned by Al, in a way, for choosing to cave rather than fight at a time when the country is in the hands of trump.
I dont blame him, but I feel like our champion is gone. When we need him. Its kind of insult added to injury.

(30,481 posts)I expect that is what he will begin working on almost immediately. He will network during that time to see what else is out there. Either way, he is set for life. At 66 it might be time for a book or three and retirement.
