(12,754 posts)and the fact that a lot of people want to see you dead has a tendency to wipe that smile off your face.

(11,700 posts)the reality that he'd be looking at cement walls and steel bars, eating prison food and having people watch you take a shit like you're animal for the rest of your life might have sunk in. When he's surrounded by maniacs who will gut you for no reason at all it will really sink in.

(15,438 posts)I knew that photograph they'd been touting wasn't a recent one the moment I heard that he had dyed his hair red. The clean-cut, boy-next-door photograph corporate media were touting was more "wholesome" for the viewers.

(192 posts)I've never heard that expression. I've heard about reading lines on hands and reading the shape of your head.

(54,065 posts)It serves no one's interest. Not sure how you got around to seeing a race angle here.

(38,187 posts)the mass shooters have some seedy "different" look. I think they often aim to show that a lot of these shooters look like any other person you see in public on any given day; the everyman look. I'm not sure about wholesome or the race angle either, but I do think it is a good thing to dispel the myths about these shooters somehow having a "look" about them. They really don't look all that different than anyone else. It is what they do that makes them mass shooters anyhow, not how they look.
On the other hand, the guy's facial expressions (how he bugged his eyes out several times and how he acted) in the video are sort of strange, to me, somehow.

(12,754 posts)When you're working under pressure and under deadline as a journalist to get a photo of someone, you take whatever you can get. You don't shop around to get a photo that suits some political agenda of yours. I've been in that position. It's not an easy thing to do. Usually the family isn't quite cooperative. You may be able to get one from a friend -- and in that case, it would probably look like the one we saw. Very often, your best source is a high-school or college yearbook, which might also look like what we saw. Very rarely does the photo you first get look like what you see in the first appearance in court. Also, by the time this goes to trial, he will have a completely different look, which won't be anything close to the two photos we've seen so far.

(54,065 posts)There's really no discernible case for diminished capacity here. I mean, the guy is clearly "sick" in the colloquial sense of the word. But all that premeditation and sneaking in the back door shows this was a ration, but almost purely evil, guy. Lock him up & throw away the key is the best he can hope for.
flamingdem
(39,321 posts)That will be the next massive controversy.
It's better that we don't as a society sweep him out of our midst, he is an American, this society was the context for this act. We need to live with that.

(11,366 posts)If he has schzophrenia or something similar, he could have been role-playing in a self-created world and has no earthly idea he's even killed someone.
I read somewhere on DU that Jared Loughner had no clue what he had done - or why - until he was given anti-psychotic drugs.
I'm not defending or accusing Holmes, but I covered courts for years as a reporter and have seen just about everything imaginable.

(101,361 posts)He looks tired. Having been in jail for 3 days, with, if rumours are true, other inmates shouting they'd kill him, being interrogated, perhaps having moments of lucidity when he realises what he's done - it's not surprising.
Take the 'someone else was controlling and funding him' to a conspiracy site. You're accusing the state of Colorado of that, by the way, if you think "someone is drugging him" in jail. It's anti-government BS.
