I think of her when I recall my visits to the redwoods in CA.

Plaque at Lady Bird Johnson Grove Trail Redwood National Park

‘One of my most unforgettable memories of the past years is walking through the Redwoods last November – seeing the lovely shafts of light filtering through the trees so far above, feeling the majesty and silence of that forest, and watching a salmon rise in one of those swift streams – all our problems seemed to fall into perspective and I think every one of us walked out more serene and happier.’ Lady Bird Johnson, July 30, 1969

That storm was huge by D.C. standards. My brothers built a six foot snow fort from 2 to 3 feet of snow. Did not like snow days added onto school year, Deep into June that year.

My friend & i took our daughters (students @ UT Austin, Lady Bird's alma mater) down to Austin to rent their apartment, and while there we visited the LBJ library on the UT campus. We saw her office, and the legacy of a great Democratic president. Their love story is well documented at the library - he attended Texas State while he courted her at UT. She was quite a beauty and a vivacious young lady compared to his shy, stiff, almost awkward demeanor. I highly recommend visiting the center if anyone is ever in the Austin area. Also recommend the Clinton library in Little Rock, and JFK's in Boston.

I was just a child when the blizzard of 66 happened. My mother used to tell us stories about my dad and the neighbors digging a path to the main road. Washington can be very beautiful when the snow falls.
