Lieu: Bannon and Flynn turning on Trump is reminiscent of Nixon era

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) on Wednesday said former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon’s comments critical of the Trump administration remind him of the downfall of former President Richard Nixon.

“Nixon’s downfall was accelerated when insiders started to turn on him. Bannon was an insider. He is turning on @realDonaldTrump. So is #Flynn,” Lieu tweeted, referring to Trump’s former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Lieu’s tweet is a reaction to excerpts from an upcoming book on the early days of the Trump presidency that included statements from Bannon critical of the president and his allies.

In the excerpts, Bannon described a July 2016 meeting at Trump Tower that included Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer as “treasonous” and “unpatriotic.”

He also said he believed there was “zero” chance that the president was not aware of the meeting, which contradicts previous White House statements.
