The Marine Corps commandant: "I hope I'm wrong, but there's a war coming."

The Atlantic:

There are sounds, for those who can hear them, of the preliminary and muffled drumbeats of war. The Chinese are reported to be preparing refugee camps along North Korean border. Resources are being shifted to observe and analyze the North Korean military. Mundane logistical processes of moving, stockpiling and updating critical items and preparing military personnel are under way. Only the biggest indicator—the evacuation of American dependents from South Korea—has yet to flash red, but, in the interest of surprise, that may not happen.

“America’s circumspect and statesmanlike Secretary of Defense, James Mattis, talks ominously of storm clouds gathering over Korea, while the commandant of the Marine Corps simply says ‘I hope I’m wrong, but there’s a war coming.'

Mattis has been there, and he has done that. Unlike Trump, Mattis has faced combat, and he's seen people die in combat. The troops love him, and the junior grade officers love him. He's a bit of a battle-rattle kind of guy. But that's what you'd expect to from a Marine in the position of Secretary of Defense.

Now here's the big question. Can Mattis reign in Trump? Can Mattis keep Trump from doing something crazy? I'm going to go out on a limb, and say yes.

War will happen when we, the U.S., make it happen. So don't make it happen.
