(37,748 posts)I checked Amazon through my account, and the listing for the E-book has been changed to Jan 05, but the Kindle is still listed as a pre-order for the 9th (and I have zero idea as to the difference between an e-book or a Kindle book).

(7,530 posts)I worked at Borders. Big releases (Like Harry Potter) were sent at least a week beforehand and were kept in the back room in boxes with protective tape DO NOT SHELVE UNTIL [THIS DATE].
This made it easier to make sure big stores would be stocked with enough copies without having to receive them all the day of or the night before and wouldn't cheat any store who had their shipment delayed somehow.
It was HUGE TROUBLE if you broke release date. I had heard of stores that gave out Harry Potter and the Cucumber of Whatever it Was too early, or were sneaking the boxes open and letting employees pre-read them. Publishers removed stores from the early shipment list if they found out you broke street date, which was VER' BAD.

(38,002 posts)The book had already been printed and bound (and I heard shipped) by the time the publisher sent out the excerpts. The book is foregone. Any attempt to force-stop its sale would triple the Streisand effect.
