Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert mourns the death of partner Rayya Elias from cancer - 16 months after leaving her husband for her female best friend

The author of mega-hit memoir Eat, Pray, Love has announced the death of her partner Rayya Elias from cancer.

'She was my love, my heart, my best friend, my teacher, my rebel, my angel, my protector, my challenger, my partner, my muse, my wizard, my surprise, my gift, my comet, my liberator, my rock star, my completely impossible non-cooperator, my otherworldly visitor, my spiritual portal, and my baby. I loved you so much,' Elizabeth Gilbert wrote on Instagram.

Ms Gilbert revealed in September 2016 that she was dating fellow author Ms Elias, who she described as her 'best friend of over a decade'.

She had been married to Jose Nunes since 2007 - but she said it was Elias' pancreatic cancer diagnosis in the spring of 2016 that made her realize her true affection for the person who had previously just been a platonic friend.
