What would it be?

(881 posts)The idea that tax cuts lead to greater prosperity when they're already at historic lows and we're having serious discussion about cutting vital social programs at all levels of government.

In a saner country we would have seen much of the Bush administration on trial.

(14,177 posts)I will go with, social spending doesn't disappear into the ether. They don't specifically say that is what they think. But, all the hollerin they do about social spending indicates that is what they think happens to the money rather than that money going right back into the economy. What money might as well being going into the ether is the money that the 1% is hoarding in foreign bank accounts. That money is not going back into the economy.

(192 posts)You have to be illogical not to know that fewer guns lead to fewer crimes. Considering the huge portion of guns sold are used in crimes, stopping the sale of new guns would lead to a safer country.

(17,064 posts)Really? There are about 200 million guns in circulation... how many do you think are involved in crimes? What percentage is that?
HooptieWagon
(17,064 posts)There are 477K gun related crimes committed annually, and 65K instances of a firearm being used in defense. This includes police using gun for degense, but that is sligjtly less than citizens.
Firearms account for 68% of homicides, 42% of robberies, and 22% of aggravated assaults. Data for aggravated rape not available. For all gun related crimes, handguns account for the weapon about 75% of the time. This varies little for each type of crime. Homicides are down about 40% from the peak 20 years ago. Most gun-related crimes are committed by persons with a criminal record, and most victims of a gun-related crime have a criminal record. The majority of guns used in a crime were stolen, borrowed, or bought on the street.
Now, here's the clincher for poster above who asserted a huge portion of guns are used in crimes: Of all the crimes related to handguns, the number of individual guns amounts to 6500. Out of 70,000,000 handguns in circulation, that represents .01%. So, not only is the portion not huge, it is extremely small. The only thing huge is the FAIL exhibited by the above poster.
Data collected from DOJ, National Institute of Justice, and WIKI websites.

(6,268 posts)I'm not saying that more guns=less crime... simply that crime rates are much more complex than the number of guns out there. There is no correlation (either way) that more/less guns increases or decreases violent crime rates.

(48,955 posts)Just in the past decade:
Energy Deregulation: Market manipulation in California extracting more than a billion out of the state economy.
Commodities Deregulation: led to complex financial deals in Enron that led to the above mentioned crisis, and to the implosion of Enron (extracting millions - billions? - out of the US economy. Rinse repeat - leads to 'hedging' with crazy concocted commodities with no financial backing - think CDOs and the housing market crash/banking crash from which we are still staggering. Billions (trillions?) extracted from the world economy.
Pharmaceutical Deregulation: sped the rate of new med.s to market - but the model now is pull from the market after disastrous results (often many deaths) occur.
Financial Institution Deregulation: Market fixing to benefit the financial institutions at the cost of investors and the public (bail outs.) Again - billions extracted out of the economy - with multi-millions lining the pockets of the executives in said institutions.
The list goes on. The common factor - "legal" defrauding of the public, with a handful of folks getting really, really, obscenely rich.

(8,124 posts)911 was the finale to the Oklahoma City Bombing and other false-flag attacks that led us to a 12 year war, 5000 dead soldiers, the Arab Spring and $Trillions of dollars in debt.
The MIC benefited, we got TSA, ulimited war without Congressional declaration, The Patriot Act, The Military Commissions Act. Obama signed the Natl Defense Auth Act.
Read today that the Marine Corps is training Police Units to work within the U.S. Borders.
We are living in Germany circa 1932... and 911 opened the door.. started it all.

(5,178 posts)Forcing them to face the reality of what they are covering up. Showing the millions who support and invest in Wall St. exactly what they are profiting from. Plead with them to stop killing all the animals & forests. Beg them to stop destroying what little is left even if it is too late to stop the worst effects.
Not that it would change anything anyway. People really don't care, at all. It would feel good to have it be common knowledge though. So when the fish are belly up and the redwoods are gone we can point to the automatons who felt no sympathy for anything but their own selfish ends.
