The big jobs guy, the smartest man in the world, the one who makes the best deals (there's no better deal maker in the world), the guy who's going to bring so many jobs that the people will start saying "Stop! Stop with all the jobs!" That guy, it turns out, isn't producing more jobs at all. (Color me shocked!)

As a solar company, we are devastated to learn Trump has imposed a 30% tariff on solar panels virtually killing the solar industry. Solar employs more people than coal and oil combined. today's decision will cause the loss of roughly 23,000 American jobs this year.

(56,828 posts)and, 2017 was also the weakest year for job creation since 2011.
And, not related to union jobs. I believe the tourism industry lost a lot of jobs and took a hit hit last year and that can definitely be laid at the feet of Trump because nobody outside the US wants to visit here because of Trump.

(22,156 posts)Since tourism is down from overseas, wouldn't you think it'll translate into less American products being brought overseas, because of the anti-American feelings that tRUMP is bringing on?
Also, foreigners have been one of the biggest purchasers of our debt.
So, less demand for our dollars to buy products and debt, means that the dollar will face even greater downside risk, which means eventually we buy overseas is going to cost more too, e.g., a high percentage of our gasoline, etc.
So, higher prices for goods purchased, less demand for goods made here, higher prices to pay for our debt, also means that interest costs will go up eventually on all interest-rate sensitive loans, etc. and the dollar is already down some 10%, and probably has more to drop.
Doesn't look good...

(12,673 posts)Time to dig through the box of propaganda memorabilia my dad left me for that old "WIN" button.
And I should get G-Grandma's old treadle sewing machine fixed, set up some planters for a produce garden on the south side, and get any fixed loans for energy efficiency home repairs submitted within the next 6 months before interest rates go through the roof...
I don't think I'm going to lose my job any time soon, but one never knows.

(6,556 posts)what the total LOSS of jobs in the USA due to tRump's actions. It seems that for every celebration of jobs, jobs, jobs, there are more jobs that are being lost, including federal positions opened up without replacing them. It seems that every time I read about a number of jobs being created there is another article that shows job losses.

(56,828 posts)though both claimed to believe in a strong dollar, the truth was they let it go down so that it would help exports a bit. However, the first big wave of foreign buyouts of American corporations was in the 1980s with Japan buying up a lot of American corporations and real estate because of the cheap dollar.

(49,032 posts)Buy on rumor, sell on news. By that, the market would have gone down after the tax cuts actually passed. But the weak dollar means foreign money must be coming in to buy cheap stocks, cheap relative to other parts of the world.

I can't take much more lower beneath the lowest common denominator to make them feel better about being morons...somethings simply need to be, and one of them is feeling ashamed of being stupid without even trying to become less so...

(2,062 posts)Ok I agree witht he jobs outlook, but many of these brick and mortar stores are closing but are doing good as web companies. I have had Sears and other stores in my area close down only to get web announcements for the same companies. Barnes and Nobel, other book companies too....

(22,156 posts)doing any better. They all missed the internet years ago, and by now, it is too late (most of them thought it was a fad, etc.). If anything, they are trying to play catch-up, but it is far too late.
In all fairness, there are a few who managed to successfully transition to the WWW (world wide web) too, Target, Home Depot, etc. but fossils such as Sears and J. C. Penney's tried to jump on the bandwagon and missed.
A bunch of other hungry competitors such as Amazon, etc. jumped in, w/ better websites, better support, etc. and put the supporting infrastructure in place to support their platforms. Smart.
I don't 100% like it, because I really don't like shopping via my computer, and would rather go shopping/browsing/walking around to the local shops and do face-to-face.
