(6,254 posts)especially if that client is the notorious, skilled, world class liar named Trump. No doubt at some point he will turn on his lawyers. Think of this, top DC legal talent will not represent an alledged billionaire. Trump is so lacking in character that even top rate lawyers will have nothing to do with him. As a criminal defense lawyer I represent some pretty unsavory characters. Trump should be a lawyers dream, unlimited source of funds to mount a defense, a dream client. But he is so reviled, his flawed character is so obvious that even the alllure of unlimited fees arent enough to attract DCs best legal talent. Moreover, were I representing Trump I would definitely have another from my office sitting in on a meeting with Trump followed up by a letter to him outlining strategy/recommendations etc. In NJ it is ok to record your conversations with another person so I would record any meetings with Trump as well. Thiefs, rapists, molesters, drug dealers, I have represented them all but would never represent a guy like Trump. Thats where I draw the line!

(15,361 posts)because they are all IOUs to some notorious international gangsters - he'd have to ask permission for a few million more rubles.
Wouldn't you demand an up-front retainer equal to the maximum amount you will spend on this "project"? You could pay back overages just in case your client was cooperative and wasn't guilty and didn't need representation for the next 20 years in the pen. Just in case...

(6,254 posts)is cash poor. I believe he has used campaign funds to pay some lawyers. A real billionaire could put up a 5 to 10 million dollar retainer with ease. Trumps wealth is all smoke and mirrors and I suspect you are correct he is up to his eyeballs in debt. Word has it that the premier law firms wouldnt touch Trump. Looks more like he couldnt afford the retainer that a top legal firm would command so he settled for what appears to be a a mom and pop legal team. If it were me facing Muellers team and I had the resources Trump supposedly has, I would hire the best lawyers in the country and pay them whatever they wanted liquidating assets if need be to pay the retainer no matter how extraordinary.

Top lawyers with at least four major law firms rebuffed White House overtures to represent President Trump in the Russia investigations, in part over concerns that the president would be unwilling to listen to their advice, according to five sources familiar with discussions about the matter.
The unwillingness of some of the countrys most prestigious attorneys and their law firms to represent Trump has complicated the administrations efforts to mount a coherent defense strategy to deal with probes being conducted by four congressional committees as well as Justice Department special counsel Robert Mueller.
The presidents chief lawyer now in charge of the case is Marc E. Kasowitz, a tough New York civil litigator who for years has aggressively represented Trump in multiple business and public relations disputes often with threats of countersuits and menacing public statements but who has little experience dealing with complex congressional and Justice Department investigations that are inevitably influenced by media coverage and public opinion.

The concerns were, The guy wont pay and he wont listen, said one lawyer close to the White House who is familiar with some of the discussions between the firms and the administration, as well as deliberations within the firms themselves.

The story begins after the death of Trumps father, Fred Sr., in 1999. As David Cay Johnston explains in his book The Making of Donald Trump, Fred Sr. had written a will after the death of his oldest son, Fred Jr., known as Freddy, in 1981. The will left the majority of Fred Sr.s wealth to Donald and his surviving siblings. Freddys family was largely cut out.
When Fred Sr. died, Freddys children sued, claiming that the will had been procured by fraud and undue influence by Donald and the other surviving siblings, according to Johnston.
Johnston writes that medical insurance had consistently been provided to the family through Fred Sr.s company. This coverage was crucial for Freddys grandson (Donalds grandnephew), who suffered from seizures and later developed cerebral palsy. So crucial, in fact, that a letter sent from a Trump lawyer to the insurer after the patriarchs death in 1999 said that all costs for the sick childs care should be covered, regardless of caps on the plan or medical necessity, according to Johnston. That didnt last long.
A week after the lawsuit was filed in court, Freddys son (Donalds nephew) received a letter informing him that the health insurance would be discontinued, meaning his ill son would be left without coverage. Donald openly admitted to the New York Daily News that he and his siblings took this action out of revenge.

If his ass lips are moving, he's lying. He will absolutely lie to Mueller, probably with every word he speaks after he states his name.
