Justice Department’s third-highest official just resigned amid Trump’s DOJ criticisms

The third-highest-ranking official in the Justice Department resigned from her associate attorney general position on Friday amid growing criticism from the GOP about alleged anti-Trump biases in the department.

The New York Times reported that associate AG Rachel Brand and her assistant Currie Gunn resigned after only nine months as the second in line in the Russia investigation following Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ recusal last year.

Last month, CNN reported that Brand was a driving force behind the reauthorization of a key portion of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, a bill that allows a secretive Justice Department court to grant spying warrants on American citizens. FISA has recently come under fire from the president and some Republicans after a memo written by GOP members of the House Intelligence Committee summarized alleged surveillance abuses in the warrant issued for former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

Page, it should be noted, was the subject of FISA warrants in 2014 as well for his known association with Russian government officials.

This is ominous, to say the least.
