President Obama stands as an example that the GOP cannot equal. THAT is one reason that they hate him.

They know they won't ever have a candidate who comes close to Obama - so tearing him down is their only alternative.

Everytime they do, it gets more obvious that they've got nothing. Trump just is a big loser who can't take responsibility for anything.

The only person the Trump base hates more than Hillary is Obama. Trump could blame Obama for the weather and the base would accept it without question .

Fox and Limbaugh share a whole lot of the blame but the Trump base would have hated Obama without them. It will be a long time before Trump's racist base will forgive the temerity of Obama for not knowing his place.

I have had a hard time understanding the hatred among conservatives in Arkansas for Hillary that extends back to when Bill was Governor. The only thing I have come up with is the Hillary is wicked smart and has never felt obliged to hide that fact. There have long been conservative men - and surprisingly women - in Arkansas that have always thought that Hillary didn't know her place.

What I've come to realize is that there are at least two "Republican bases".

The Southern base has more long-term GOP and racist ties. Jim Crow runs in some families there. The Confederate flag has a hateful meaning.

But the midwestern base is a bit different. In Rust Belt and Midwestern states -- from upstate NY through PA, OH, IN, IL, WI, and MI, the base is different. Jim Crow doesn't have the same history there. Those states USED to be blue and used to be big labor states. THAT'S where Fox and Limbaugh have had the greatest propaganda effect. Those states turned from blue to red over the past 20-30 years and Limbaugh and Fox have a ton to do with it.

My experience is in the South. I remain convinced the "solid south" is based on racism. At a minimum, the open racism of the GOP doesn't offend the mid-Western base enough for them to do seriously disquiet them.

They’re that stuck in their ways. When the public turns on these people and they ask how long it will be before the rest of us let the hate mongers and reactionaries off the hook, I’d say hold them culpable at least as long as they held Senator Robert Byrd and Senator Ted Kennedy for various and assorted ills and perceived wrongdoing. At least forty-five years sounds good to me.

How long do you younger DU’ers think they deserve to stay on the hook?
