... last week, a Senate committee, after hearing .. public comment, voted, 4-2, to approve a bill that would remove three .. seldom-observed holidays from the books: Robert E. Lee's birthday .. Jefferson Davis' birthday .. and Confederate Memorial Day ...

The Legislature made Confederate Memorial Day a legal holiday back in 1895 ...

Getting this holiday on calendars across the South had been a project of the United Daughters of the Confederacy ...

Meanwhile, a key House committee chair .. decided the juice is not worth the squeeze ...

So the state statute book will continue to be littered with monuments to the War of the Rebellion ...
