University of Washington Republicans outnumbered by protesters at own rally

Angry chants, clouds of pepper spray and arrests unfolded at the University of Washington Saturday afternoon as the university’s College Republicans clashed with protesters.

Those attending the rally were outnumbered by protesters four to one. Both groups were separated by metal barriers and a line of Seattle police officers until the “Proud Boys” — a far-right men’s organization founded by Vice Media co-founder and former commentator Gavin McInnes — found their way into Red Square and confronted the protesters face to face. At one point, protesters threw glitter on the “Proud Boys,” punches were thrown and a few arrests were eventually made.

UW College Republicans hosted the rally despite the university demanding they pay an estimated $17,000 in security costs to safeguard against violence. College Republicans hosted Milo Yiannaopoulos, a right-wing figure and former Breitbart writer, in January 2017 after which violence broke out and one man was shot. (The shooter was a right winger)

The College Republicans filed a lawsuit last Tuesday on the grounds that the university was violating their constitutional right to free speech. On Friday, a federal judge granted the group a temporary restraining order, which allowed the club to move forward with the rally and temporarily prohibited the UW from imposing a fee.

On Saturday, the College Republicans invited Joey Gibson, an American conservative political activist and the founder of Patriot Prayer, a right-wing group based in Vancouver, Wash. The group is known for organizing pro-Trump rallies.

“This rally needed to happen because this rally proved that we don’t actually have the free speech rights that we thought we did on this campus,” Swanson said to some 50 supporters. “Faceless thugs out there are determining whether or not we can speak and if we didn’t have a court order telling the school that we had to speak, we wouldn’t be out here. They use threats. They use violence. They use intimidation. And the school is letting them do that to stop us.”

They are a hate group and need to be treated as such.

The police were merely there to keep the rally attendees and protestors from hurting each other.

Officers expressed sympathy with white supremacists and sought their help to target counter-protesters after a violent 2016 rally, according to court documents

The police did what they should do -- work to keep the opposing groups apart.

The rally — led by leaders of the College Republicans and their guests, the right-leaning Patriot Prayer, based in Vancouver, Washington — was peaceful early on. The chaos came roughly 75 minutes in, despite officers’ efforts to keep at a distance a couple of hundred protesters who far outnumbered the pro-Trump crowd. Those protesters came to denounce the president and promote a variety of anti-capitalist or pro-civil-rights themes.

Lines of waist-high metal barriers and UW and Seattle police officers separated the politically opposed groups. Officers were in riot gear.

At one point, people with the Patriot Prayer gathering exited their sectioned-off area of Red Square — where leaders gave speeches and performed music — to walk into the opposing crowd. Swearing, spitting, shouting and fighting followed.

For weeks, the UW was in talks with rally organizers to ensure safety. The potential for violence worried authorities, especially given the shooting in January 2017 in Red Square, after right-wing firebrand Milo Yiannopoulos spoke at the UW at the invitation of the College Republicans. On Saturday, the police effort to keep groups apart was clear — a tactic not fully seen at the Yiannopoulos event.

Police did not provide details Saturday about the five arrests.

These fuckers have tried to stage rallies in Portland, and every time there's been violence and they've tried to paint themselves as victims. It's as predictable as a rainbow after the rain.
