The election of a woman as mayor of the city of Hildale, Utah has caused a political earthquake that has sparked a mass exodus of government employees.
KSL.com reports that 11 city employees resigned from their positions last week and one of them cited his religious objections to working for a woman as a primary reason.
Specifically, the employee claimed that his religious beliefs prevented him from following a woman, and from serving on a board with apostates as the reason for his resignation.
Mayor Donia Jessop, who made history as the first woman elected as mayor of Hildale last November, was sworn into office last month. She is also the first Hildale mayor who is not a member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which has long been the most dominant force in the citys politics.
The Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a fundamentalist Mormon sect, is infamous for its promotion of polygamy and child marriages. The church also forces all female members to wear pioneer-style dresses.

I donate to FFRF too. I love Ron Reagan Jr.'s ads. "Separation of Church and State as the Founding Fathers wanted it to be. Lifelong Atheist and not afraid of burning in Hell". His dear, ol' dad is the one who shoved the Moral Majority down everyone's throat.

(5,801 posts)had a friend who worked in raygun's White House. He said that after one meeting between ronnie and fundy leaders, Saint R walked out and remarked to his staff "that should take care of those people for another year." The words used by the Saint might have been more, um, crass--it's been several years since I heard that story. The import, however, was clear--he had no respect for their beliefs and was just doing the minimum to keep the kooks voting puke.
Of course, the fundies have now hit the jackpot with "Sure, make the US a theocracy, as long as I'm the king" dump.

(82,849 posts)Sad that these persons have such retrograde thinking, but at least they quit their jobs rather than continue in their positions and refuse to do their jobs. I'd bet Hildale has a few people who can take their place.

The Earth Quake of Political nature is,at the Washington County Seat in St George,Pepto -Bismol is in short supply. Can you imgine a new Mayor of Hilldale having to deal with the City Attornies who are based in St George and have bled millions out of this Town.

When I was growing up w/ some Mormons and other denominations in school (elementary and secondary), they had somewhat strange beliefs, no buttons on their clothes, no modern tools, etc. (besides Mormons, 7th Day Adventurists and other denominations too), arranged marriages (they didn't call it that then), etc. I sometimes found them rather hypocritical in nature, can't own power tools, but they'll use yours if they are doing a job for you. Don't own cars, but will take a ride if need be. My dad, when he hired them out once, had to drive 40 miles each way to pick them up/take them home after their daily job(s) for my dad.
Their work, believe it or not, I thought was very substandard, and pointed it out to my dad. He demurred, but did mention that being out in the middle of Missouri w/ no ready labor available to do the odd jobs, he somewhat had no choice. Another disadvantage of 'living in the country'.
I had one even come to my Mom and Dad's house while I was working and going to college back in the mid-1970s...they asked my Mom if I would marry their pentecostal daughter. Never dated her, had her for a lunch date or anything!
My mom was shocked and told them to leave, told me about it later, when I got home. I was shocked too, didn't even have an inkling.
Don't get me wrong, these people were nice to us always, no complaints w/ them at all, and we got along w/ the vast majority of them (except one time my Mom had a member of a church that deals w/ snakes and so forth, tried to 'preach' to her about it, and she ordered him out of the house).
This is what is amazing about America, the ability to believe in what you want, and be respected for it. Period.
