Rob Porter is Getting Due Process. Trump Adminstration Fucked Up.

Let me try to take this Rob Portman fiasco as I think it should be taken.

This is not a situation that needs evidence beyond a reasonable doubt. This is an employment issue at the point of hiring.

Each entity, public or private, sets its own standards on hiring. If you are going to work in the School Department, you are required to pass a CORI check. In the police department, there is a more extensive background check. If you become a train conductor, they check your driving record. If you work in a bank, there will be credit checks, as well as a criminal background check.

Employers set those standards and are free to set them at any level that they deem appropriate (unless a stricter code is required by law).

The FBI, the CIA, the Justice Department and especially the White House use the most intrusive and thorough background checks in this country. In investigating an applicant, they talk to family members, former co-workers, associates, neighbors and friends. They want to know what books you read, what hobbies you have. They can ask anything and everything.

Of course the FBI was going to interview Porter's former wives and girlfriend.

This was no surprise. Here is part of what I have gleamed out of this investigation that has not been highlighted enough.

It is reported that one (or both) of Porter's ex-wives received a call from Porter in an effort to have her lie to the FBI. He tried to coach her before the interview. I would think that this is, in and of itself, a crime.

When hiring, the employer can set any standard they wish. The employee can then accept the process or withdraw his or her application. At the point of hiring, the employer holds all the cards, in this case, the American people are the employers, who expect to be protected from individuals who apply for the most sensitive jobs in this country. If an individual can't pass a background check, they should not be hired in those most sensitive of jobs.
