Leaning over in his bed at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, 6-year-old Alex Gosa looked into the eyes of a golden retriever named Jake and gently stroked his head. When he learned Jake was 8, Alex told his mother and the hospital staff, "I'm catching up with him."
Just as Jake was leaving, Alex's mom, Melissa Gosa of Savannah, Tenn., turned her attention to the dog. "Can I get a kiss?" she asked. Alex smiled as his mom hugged Jake's neck.
For the past two weeks, Le Bonheur's staff has been allowing dogs to help critically ill patients in the intensive care unit get better. It's the first time canines have been allowed in the hospital's ICU.
The dogs have provided a lift since her son was airlifted to the hospital when he lost his toe in an accident two weeks ago, Gosa said. "It takes your mind off what's really going on. It's a highlight seeing the dogs."
