Richard Nixon: Special Message to the Congress Recommending a Program To End Hunger in America - May 6, 1969
Public Papers of the Presidents
To the Congress of the United States:
"We have long thought of America as the most bounteous of nations. In our conquest of the most elemental of human needs, we have set a standard that is a wonder and aspiration for the rest of the world. Our agricultural system produces more food than we can consume, and our private food market is the most effective food distribution system ever developed. So accustomed are most of us to a full and balanced diet that, until recently, we have thought of hunger and malnutrition as problems only in far less fortunate countries.
But in the past few years we have awakened to the distressing fact that despite our material abundance and agricultural wealth, many Americans suffer from malnutrition. Precise factual descriptions of its extent are not presently available, but there can be no doubt that hunger and malnutrition exist in America, and that some millions may be affected.
That hunger and malnutrition should persist in a land such as ours is embarrassing and intolerable. But it is an exceedingly complex problem, not at all susceptible to fast or easy solutions. Millions of Americans are simply too poor to feed their families properly. For them, there must be first sufficient food income. But this alone would only begin to address the problem, for what matters finally is what people buy with the money they have. People must be educated in the choosing of proper foods. All of us, poor and non-poor alike, must be reminded that a proper diet is a basic determinant of good health. Our private food industry has made great advances in food processing and packaging, and has served the great majority of us very well. But these advances have placed great burdens on those who are less well off and less sophisticated in the ways of the modern marketplace. We must therefore work to make the private food market serve these citizens as well, by making nutritious foods widely available in popular forms. And for those caught in the most abject poverty, special efforts must be made to see that the benefits of proper foods are not lost amidst poor health and sanitary conditions.
The Council for Urban Affairs has for the past three months been studying the problem of malnutrition in America, and has assessed the capacities of our present food and nutrition programs. As a result of the Council's deliberations, I am today prepared to take the following actions: "
I. FAMILY FOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS ...

(67,112 posts)an extremely smart person, actually a bit paranoid too. Given the choices today, I would rather have Nixon back than this present sludge.

(2,805 posts)but still better than the fool we have as our current President. At least Nixon approved of knowledge whether he used it in good fashion or not.He was an ass but at least a smart one.

(19,611 posts)It was my formative years.
I see it as the height of irony that we, the rebellious children of those times, must take up his fight with the same enemy, now attempting to topple the Republic and undermine it's institutions via infiltration and election tampering.
We must not fail.

(2,805 posts)He at least tried some sort of appropriate conduct not always acting like a liar with no remorse. He may have been "a crook" but at least he pretended to be a decent human being. I have no love of Nixon but Trump is far worse. He is just a terrible person, every way you dice it. Just no semblance of decency. Horrible.

(51,626 posts)Who would have ever thought that Nixon would not be the worst president in our lifetime? Not me! Same with Reagun, Bush #2, etc. All three of them combined is still better than the fucking moron.

(11,990 posts)George W. Bush is a better human being than Trump, but Trump hasn't (yet) started an unnecessary war killing tens of thousands of people, nor crashed the economy. Though he's working hard on planting the seeds.
Nixon did some good things, but it takes a lot to get past sabotaging the efforts to establish peace in Viet Nam.

(180 posts)that "W" was worse due to starting an unnecessary war, I tend to believe more in the Lancet study when it comes to the actual war casualties. I'd imagine the numbers are in the hundreds (not tens) of thousands, with the reality being that after all this time it may have crossed over the 7-figure mark. If you add the ISIS numbers to the mix (and why not - the power vacuum created this situation), then I'm sure we are in uncharted territory.
Sadly, we will never be allowed to see a true reconciliation of the true costs of this war, from financial costs, destruction of historical artifacts, environmental damage, elevation of suppressive regimes and human suffering and casualties.

(13,390 posts)He also created the EPA. They may be similarly corrupt, but there's a huge difference in their nature and I think motivations. In Trump's reality he and his ego are the only things that matter. Nixon actually had some good intentions and he wanted to do work he was elected to do. He was also a racist a bigot and deserves no forgiveness for it. But if we are to truly comprehend what is happening now, the differences in the men should be remembered.

(1,368 posts)He may done some "good" things but what he was was certainly not something we would want for a President of our Democracy. Simply, remember his sabotaging the Paris Peace talks in order to win an election and which resulted in a horrendous extension of the Vietnam war. This was Treason- really the same stuff that is going on now. He was no saint, even compared to what we have now.

(19,611 posts)And I also agree with Hunter S. Thompsons assesment of Nixon - he was so crooked his servants had to screw his pants on in the morning.
Trump is the new nadir of sordidity.

(45,516 posts)as America was also more moderate on social programs. He made this statement just 4 years after Medicare/Medicaid, which would be unthinkable now. The voters wanted hungry people to have food and the crooked president agreed.
The Republican party and a large portion of America has shifted hard right since then.

(9,127 posts)Feeling lost in Trump-land and in the Tea Party's GOP? Richard Nixon's domestic policies are far more in tune with today's Democratic Party than what the Trump-publicans are trying to enact into law today. A lot of former moderate Republicans came to that conclusion years ago, stopped voting Republican, and started supporting Democrats. You can, too. You might even find some old friends who'd already seen the light.
