A Florida puppeteer known for community involvement was arrested and charged with conspiring to kidnap a child and possession of child pornography, according to a criminal complaint filed in a federal court in Tampa court on Friday.

A day earlier, federal and local agents arrested Ronald William Brown, 57, after uncovering graphic Internet chats in which he talked about abducting, murdering and cannibalizing children, referring specifically to his interest in a boy attending his church, the complaint says.

investigators came across pornographic images of children, including some of boys in bondage and others in which the subject appears to be dead, according to the 29-page complaint.

Brown, who lived alone in the Whispering Pines mobile home park in Largo, had ties to many organizations in the Tampa Bay area, including the Gulf Coast Church, the Pinellas County School District, the Christian Television Network, the city of Largo, and Gulf Coast Jewish Family & Community Services, the Tampa Bay Times reported. All said Brown had been hired or volunteered as a performer, instructor or mentor, according to the report.

4. How many times does this have to happen before people realize that pedophiles try to be around kids?

They arrange things, they volunteer, they buy a home right behind the local grammar school abutting on the playground, they endow foundations that ensure their access to children, they go to churches where if you spout the right rhetoric you're golden no matter how creepy you are, they become clowns, they become puppeteers.

All he was doing was finding an inroad to the children by pretending to be a God-fearing Christian who only cared about making life better for children. The bastard's in jail now.

7. The problem with that is in practice it translates to:

anyone (male) who wants to be around a kid (even their own) should be assumed a pedophile until proven otherwise (ie the wife comes by and says yes that is our kid).

And then we lament why men are so unwilling to help out in raising and taking care of kids (at home or as careers).

I was myself molested when I was a kid..

Also had experience trying to get rid of a HS coach who was fairly obviously fucking at least a couple of the girl's soccer team when my daughter was in HS. That was unsuccessful and we found out later that he eventually got a girl pregnant..

Yeah, the problem you outline exists but I'm not sure what can be done about it.

I was pointing out that the assumption that every male is one is flawed.

There are women who murder their children. But I'd hesitate to label all mothers potential baby-killers.

I don't think child-molesters exist in any greater numbers here than they do elsewhere. And yet other nations manage to survive without the same level of hysteria.

13. I think America has some aspects that make it friendlier for pedophiles..

For one thing we are a very mobile society, people don't know their neighbors very often and new people coming in to our social circles are not at all uncommon.

The whole evangelical/fundie/megachurch thing is just ripe for pedophiles, as I mentioned all you have to do is learn the language they use, spout it at every opportunity and you can get away with an amazing amount of shit.. While that's not a uniquely American phenomenon it's definitely more prevalent here than in other developed nations. It's really gotten to the point that when someone starts in with the fundie language I first check my wallet and then my grandkids..

Protestations to the contrary, we are also a remarkably authoritarian society in many ways, people like Sandusky can get away with a lot of vile behavior because they get themselves into a position of authority that will give automatic deference from a great many Americans.
