BY MALLORY SHELBOURNE - 02/18/18 09:31 AM EST
Conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh on Sunday called for concealed carry in American schools to prevent mass shootings.
The solution is we need concealed carry in these schools. If we are really serious about protecting the kids, we need a mechanism to be defensive when this kind of thing if were not going to take action, we better have mechanisms in these schools to stop it when it breaks out, Limbaugh told Fox News Sunday.
Limbaughs remarks come after 17 people were killed last week when a gunman opened fire at a high school in South Florida.
Some conservatives have suggested teachers should be armed as one solution to violence in schools.
If we dont do that, then all the rest of this is nothing more than political posturing for the 2018 midterms and the 2020 election, Limbaugh said of concealed carry.

(1,896 posts)I had a professor who would describe the lead up to a disaster then throw his hands in the air and say "what could possibly go wrong?" then describe the awful consequences and finish by saying "who could have foreseen this?" . Sounds like the conversation we would have after a shoot out in the hallways of a school over bad grades or a dispute over a girlfriend or some other equally life or death matter.

(5,810 posts)How in the name of common sense can anyone think having more guns present is a good thing?
How can we expect young people who still have not finished maturing and do not have strong impulse control to have the tools they need, to know when to pull out a weapon and when to leave it holstered?
A recipe for disaster is what this is. The statistics are pretty clear. More guns present makes it more likely someone will be shot. So what may be a school yard brawl becomes a mass tragedy.
Limpballs needs to butt out on this topic. Apparently HIS brain needs more time to finish maturing.

(22,121 posts)There was a gentleman just on that made two points in this regard:
1....The SWAT team is going to come in and drop people, and you best not be holding any kind of gun.
2....How effective is a handgun against an assault weapon?

(389 posts)I think banning assault weapons is wishful thinking and will never happen no matter how much we want it to. We couldn't get it done when Obama was in office. Then add in the fact we'll probably have to repeal the 2nd amendment to go along with it which will never happen.
Concealed carry may be an option we'll have to consider. If we can trust teachers with our children then we should trust them with guns to protect our children. Most of the mass shootings occur in places where no guns are allowed because the shooters don't want to be shot at. Yea a small handgun isn't much of a defense against an assault rifle, but it does give them a fighting chance and act as a deterrence.

(389 posts)Self defense isn't a military function, it's life. They don't have to go out and hunt the guy down which I don't think they should, but they have the ability to protect their classroom from the intruder.

When I got out of my car the first thing I saw was a giant billboard in front of the school that said something like this.
"Be warned. The staff and faculty of this school are armed and will use whatever force is necessary to protect our children."
Never saw that before but it makes sense to me.

(266 posts)As a hs teacher, having teachers with guns is a terrible idea. I believe all reasonable teachers would agree with me. Not to mention that, as others have mentioned and a parent I would feel the same.

(389 posts)I'm a parent but have no teaching experience. Why would teachers not like this idea? It would be completely optional and assume teachers are open to options. Or is it some bad teachers that aren't trustworthy that would abuse it?
As a parent, I'd be open to study something that could possibly protect my children.

(841 posts)Is there any evidence that the good guy with a gun theory works? Even trained police officers can have trouble accurately shooting targets especially moving ones. How are teachers supposed to teach and be cops at the same time? Wouldn't more guns make shootings more likely and even produce more innocents getting killed as teachers frantically try to go toe-to-toe with shooters in a confusing situation? If something like this ever came to pass I would hope that we pay teachers more for double duty.
