just heard on cnbc, no link.
and my brother-in-law said he and all his friends wouldn't see it because he's, well...
let's just say the word "diversity" is banned from their household....
i haven't seen it yet but sounds like it has a powerful social message.
eta: apparently i didn't hear all of what cnbc said.
the record for *all* movies is held by star wars: the force awakens at $936 million.
it would appear that the "record" they were talking about was just for live action comic book movies (they said the previous record was held by deadpool at $130 million.)
Second edit: thanks to dr. Strange for setting me straight. The $936 million above is total gross for Star Wars: the force awakens, not opening weekend.
But it also has the record for opening weekend.
Black panther has the new record for best February opening weekend and some other records.

(12,265 posts)I went the other night with a friend, it was GREAT! It was great to see a superhero who wasn't lilly white for a change even for this lilly white lady in her 60's. Loved the movie!

(100,104 posts)This was a great movie and I've been an MCU fan from the beginning and have been waiting for this movie for a long time. The wait definitely paid off! I will be seeing it again!

(16,402 posts)And I'm an old white lady. Your brother-in-law sounds like he and his friends are dopes - just like certain members of my family. Sad, isn't it?

(28,976 posts)The villain is very thought provoking and the dynamic clash of ideas and morals they create between him and the Black Panther is beautifully done.

(56,829 posts)I think my favorite character was Shuri, T'Challa's little sister.
Definitely one of Marvel's best movies. I think if the action sequences were a bit better, it could have been the best.

(11,949 posts)We plan on seeing it this weekend.
And internationally it did over 400 million. Coming after Coco, Disney is really proving the untapped value of diversity in films and that does not mean niche films for different audiences but films that have diverse cast and non traditional themes aimed at the general public. I have hopes others will follow.
FYI, I just had to crawl to the sewer that is FR and find the expected BP post. They are tearing each other to shreds with a mix of those who liked it and those who will never see it for a myriad of racist reasons. The first group calling the second racist, which is one of the few accurate things I have ever read there. The racist are accusing the ones who saw the film and liked it libtards and all the 3rd grade insults you would expect. Hugely entertaining. They are just so fucking stupid.

But the Pastey Boyz can take heart: there's a Duke Nukem movie in the works that should do just as well.

(52,328 posts)now that i've had a chance to research it a bit, i must have missed something about what cnbc said about black panther breaking a record.
they were saying the previous record was deadpool at $130 million, so i'm guessing the "record" they were talking about wasn't all movies, but just live action comic book movies.
