GOP Power Play Would Move This State Backward On Gerrymandering

By Allegra Kirkland | February 23, 2018 6:00 am

Arizona has long been held up as a model of how to create fair, representative electoral maps largely free from partisan bias.

But a Republican proposal to overhaul the independent commission that draws the state’s maps threatens that reputation.

The measure, which is sponsored by GOP leadership in both houses of the legislature, was approved on party lines by a Senate committee last week. If it passes the Republican-controlled legislature, it would go before voters as a ballot initiative in November.

A wide range of Arizona political observers tell TPM that the legislation would give lawmakers more influence over redistricting, making it easier for them to draw lines that boost their party.

Brewer was going bonkers...afterall, it seemed that at the time, it was gov. brewers decision and no one else's opinion on the subject mattered..from article "The Governor argued that it was her decision" - nope!!!! The people of AZ approved the AIRC on 2000 - by a wide margin.....

The Arizona Independent Redistricting Commission (AIRC), was created when voters approved Proposition 106 in 2000, 56.1 percent to 43.9 percent.

Proposition 106 amended the Arizona Constitution to create a bipartisan commission independent of the state legislature that would be tasked with redrawing congressional and legislative lines following the decennial census.

2 rethugs and 2 dems and 1 Independent on the commish....with a whole host of guidelines...one of which is, that they are in compliance with the U.S. Constitution and the Voting Rights Act -

That darn US Constitution just seems to always be getting in the way....!!!!!
