for children whose parents don't support background checks, bans on assault rifles and several other rational solutions to these mass shootings?

1. Because we stand in the place of their parents.

In Loco Parentis. Every day, when I arrived at school, I remembered the honor I had been given, to share in the parenting of all those children and adolescents. As you teach and guide and comfort them, they become your own kids, in your heart. And you can hope that some of your ideals and knowledge will be planted in these kids, like little seeds that may help to change the world for the better someday.

2. I'm a third generation educator and I can tell you

I did not sign on to die for anyone in a school or on a university campus. If you think assault weapons should be available to anyone but militaries, you and your children are on their own. Not me - they are not my kids.
