Better yet, why is no one from the media asking this?

Why does the #NRA have a seat at the table and no other entity does? None from the gun control side.
We didn't vote for the NRA and to top it off they don't pay taxes.#GunControlNow#GunReformNow #NeverAgain

(65,086 posts)I'm sure you've seen the list shown right here at DU detailing the $ they gave to dozens of elected officials.
Doesn't make it right, but that is the reason.

(52,267 posts)they are very effective political bloc. partly because they steer a lot of money and partly because many of their members are single-issue voters (or nearly so) who will vote for whomever the nra tells them to vote for.
this means predictably republicans the vast majority of the time, so their influence in general elections isn't actually as great as they make it out to be; but they can be very influential in primaries, particularly the republican ones.
there's also a bit of a multiplier effect when you have enough money to scare politicians. if a republican candidate is pro-gun, they can scare the democratic candidate into dropping reasonable gun control proposals simply by threatening to "target" that district/state.
welcome to democracy, american-style.
