Joe Kennedy Bashes Trump on The View Over Shooting Response: Dont Tell Me Its a Mental Health Issueby Ken Meyer | 12:17 pm, February 23rd, 2018
Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-MA) was a guest on The View Friday, and he had a few things to say about President Donald Trump and the Republican Party amid the conversation about guns following the Parkland massacre.
After joking with the ladies about how much chapstick he got in the mail after last months State of the Union rebuttal, Kennedy argued that thoughts and prayers are clearly not enough for the victims of mass casualty events. Kennedy also expressed frustration with the GOP-led Congress for refusing to hold so much as a vote on gun legislation in the last few years. We have done everything we possibly can to try to get Republican leadership just to give us a vote, Kennedy said. If a vote is voted down, fine, but give us a vote.
Kennedy warned Republicans that House Democrats wont hold the GOP accountable for action on gun violence because their constituents will vote to change Congress if Republicans dont act themselves. He moved on to express his disapproval for Trumps idea of arming school teachers, as well as the GOPs insistence that school shootings are a mental health issue instead of a gun control issue.
People with mental illness are far more likely to be victims of crime than perpetrate them, Kennedy argued. The first big bill coming out of Congress under this administration was a bill to cut medicaid, the largest payer of mental health service in this country by $800 billion. So dont turn around and tell me this is a mental health issue when you just tried to cut the biggest payer of it by $800 billion.
