Manafort had no experience at all managing any kind of political campaign. Even though he said he'd work for free, why would you hire a completely unexperienced person to run a presidential campaign? - unless he brought something else much more valuable than unpaid work. Trump already had his own Russian connections, of course; but those seem to have been with lower-level oligarchs who lent him money. Manafort had more and better connections.

beginning in 1980
Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly

The firm was one of the first political consulting firms to work for Ronald Reagan's presidential candidacy in 1980,[1] and would later also have extensive connections to the presidential administrations of George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton.[2]

In 1984 it was renamed to Black, Manafort, Stone and Kelly (BMSK) & associates, from Black, Manafort & Stone, after Peter G. Kelly was recruited.[3]

The firm has represented, and lobbied the US Congress on behalf of, numerous foreign governments and heads of state from both representative democracies and unelected dictatorships including Mohamed Siad Barre of Somalia, dictator Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines,[4][5] dictator Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire,[6] and Jonas Savimbi of Angola. During the 1988 presidential campaign in the United States, it was disclosed that Black, Manafort retained the island nation of the Bahamas as a client at a time its leadership was being attacked for alleged ties to drug traffickers. BMSK officials insisted that they intended only to help the Bahamas obtain more United States aid for efforts to curb drug smugglers.[1]

Domestically the firm represented Bethlehem Steel and Tobacco Institute, helped elect Senators Phil Gramm, Jesse Helms, Charles McCurdy Mathias Jr., Arlen Specter, Paula Hawkins and David F. Durenberger—and worked on legislation that benefitted the firm's clients.[citation needed]

He was an odd choice unless the Russia connections are considered.

he wouldn't if he was a spy for Russia. First I heard of that possibility, but why not?

get killed by one of Putin's henchmen, who have shown themselves adept at offing people in creative ways.

Of course, Trump can't pardon Manafort for convictions related to any state charges he may be faced with, and I'm sure there are some money laundering and state tax evasion laws available for a state A-G to use.

Rock, meet hard place.

I like the "If he was still POTUS." If he wasn't, he'd be looking for Pense to commute his own sentence, because it would be the biggest, most beautiful sentence in the history of the world.
