In his 2017 New York Times bestselling book On Tyranny, Yale historian Timothy Snyder warned that the American people only had one year to stop Donald Trump from causing serious and perhaps irreversible harm to our democracy, as well as other social and political institutions.
Snyder's concerns were centered on how the rule of law, reality and truth, civil and human rights, and the ways Americans interact with each other as members of a shared community would come under assault by Trump and his allies' agenda. He also sounded the alarm about the possibility that the Trump administration could stage its own version of Nazi Germany's "Reichstag fire" as a way of declaring a national emergency in order to consolidate power.
In many ways, Snyder's On Tyranny has proven eerily prescient. How has America endured under Trump's rule? Is there a way to bring Trump's voters and the Republican Party back to normal politics? What does their reaction to Robert Mueller's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election reveal about the health of American democracy? Can our be saved, and eventually redeemed?

An opinion that has a possibility because of the criminals we have in Washington..

(19,489 posts)This is no different from Republicans warning that Obama would cancel elections. Some Democrats said similar things during the Bush years.
The GOP has no need to try something so drastic and probably destructive to them. It's much easier to pervert the process, using voter suppression and fraud to distort the results in their favor. They'll just keep doing that.

Not sure he would be wise to trigger that sort of mayhem targeted specifically in his direction.

(46,209 posts)Soon thereafter, then-mayor Rudolph Giuliani, proposed to delay the mayoral elections in November, allowing him to continue to "steward" the City as it progressed after the tragedy. (It was his last term as mayor as there are term limits for this office.)
Fortunately, that idea was lambasted and refused.
Michael Bloomberg won the November election and took his oath of office as mayor the following January.
If 9-11 couldn't even delay elections, I can't imagine Trump issuing an executive order as it would be unconstitutional.

(17,984 posts)Let the orange menace tweet that he's cancelling elections. Let his base believe they don't need to vote. Let everyone else who is sane vote and erase the GOP stain.

(1,009 posts)Because there is an easy response to that: paper ballots.
If anything, I agree with above posters that they will use the same methods as before.
And I think its really up to us to be vigilant with family, friends, IRL and on social media
to counteract the propaganda that continues and keep it from spreading. But I do think
more people are woke than ever and have their skepticism goggles on. Theyre not going to
win. Voter suppression is probably the biggest worry now.
