(18,585 posts)Gilbert du Motier (the Marquis) read greek, latin, french, italian, and spanish by the time he was 12 (he was 19 when he learned English). He studied at the Collège du Plessis in Paris, then later at the Académie de Versailles, and was a commissioned officer by the time he was 14.
Many kids today can't change a tire on their car, or un-clog a toilet. Hardly an equitable comparison.

We're so much more evolved that the truly exceptional from 200 years ago is merely average today--even what we'd call spoiled rich kids if they opposed us but courageous freedom-fighters if they support us.
