Not the federal government. And if you want to blame Reagan for shutting something down then why weren't they started back up after him? He has been gone for 30 years now. Should we go back and blame Grover Cleveland if something bad happened in his administration? How far do we go back? Is nothing the responsibility of those who follow?

You're right they could've been restarted/re-opened, but he's sorta famous for having done so.

It is factual that many other states followed Reagan's example, and that hence there's a lot more mentally ill on the streets, and it's more likely they could get guns than it would be in a hospital.

Although I also believe there's no evidence that the clinically medically ill are any more likely to shoot anyone than an average citizen is so it's not a useful solution ... even if we COULD go out and 'find' all the mentally ill ...

44 years by my calendar. And there has been many Democratic governors and super majority Democratic CA legislatures since then. Why haven't they changed it if it is a problem? Why didn't you mention all the lawsuits the ACLU filed in the 60s and 70s arguing the mentally ill could not be confined by the state? Did those have no affect on the situation? The joke is on you.

The Obama EO said anyone with a representative payer for Social Security was automatically assumed mentally ill to the point of being unable to possess firearms.

When in fact there was no basis for that assumption.

Even the ACLU was against that rule.

If you can not manage your own affairs because of mental impairment or some other cause, you should not have a gun. President Obama was right.

Like I said, even the ACLU was against that move, both because it badly stereotypes and stigmatized a whole group of people and becuse it totally stripped that class of peoples of a civil right with no due process.

Generally...mental incompetence and or mental illness is the reason for this. For short term issues a temporary power of attorney would be sufficient.

And we also don’t do it without due process.

If Trump used that same standard and precedent to purge voter rolls, arguing if you can’t manage your financial affairs you can’t be responsible enough to vote, would you be ok with that?

Because that’s what you open the door to allowing other rights to be curtailed in that way.

and you know this how? Have you considered that there are numerous reasons why people let others manage their affairs?

But you don't care. You hear guns and that's all you need. You must have loved the Patriot Act and terrorist watch lists.

Shitler is treating all mental illness as a crime; but no doubt there are a few who should never have firearms. There should still be a law and not just writing it all off as Trump did with NO replacement.

And what about folks on the terrorism list? That should be a no brainer, as long as the list is trustworthy, which has been a problem as well.

The issue is where is the line between dangerous and not dangerous mentally ill?
