AFL-CIO lauds Trump's tariffs The Hill

Over the top headline, but the tariffs being approved by unions has to be news you can use.

The nation's largest federation of unions on Thursday praised President Trump's plan to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, even as GOP lawmakers in Congress and U.S. trade partners condemned the proposal.

"For years, we have called attention to the predatory practices of some steel exporting countries. Such practices hurt working people and cheat companies that produce in the U.S. We applaud the administration's efforts today to fix this problem," AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said in a statement.

"Trump also received sharp rebukes for the plan by Republicans in Congress, warning of the tax burden such tariffs might impose on working Americans."

Would tariffs on steel (25% import) and aluminum (10%) be a net positive or a net negative for the economy and blue collar workers?

For example China. If it becomes a blanket tariff there could be negative effects for economy and American labor.

If this benefits the American worker then good, that is all I care about.

Against This Announcement Well Absolutely Because Canada Happens To Be The Largest Exporter Of Steel To The United States So It’s Brazil At 13% In Contrast China Actually Is A Minor Player In Terms Of The Export Of Steel To The To The United States And Doesn’t rank Even In The Top Ten So What Is Next and And Globally Affecting Other Industries You Know Many Inside The Trump Administration And Members Of Congress Even Republicans Are Against these Steel And Aluminum Tariffs What Are The Wide-ranging Consequences Well I Think The Key Issue Is Really Precedent And How Widespread This Type Of Action will Be Because Already The Administration Has Imposed Tariffs On Other Other Areas Aluminum Foil And Also solar Products And In Those Cases If This Kind Of Action Spread If The US Trade Partners Actually Retaliate Then It Could Be Very Very Depressing For Global Trade And Of Course We Do Know And For Many People Especially Fo

Also, as much of a union supporter that I am, I've got to say to Trumka "you are too smart of a guy to fall for that". With all of the steel mills that have shut down, and many demolished, how will anybody have access to steel products to build anything?
