You've all heard of suicide by cop? Imagine a teacher confronted with someone who behaves threateningly--perhaps with a gun, perhaps pretending to have a gun--in order to provoke suicide by teacher.
If teachers are armed, it's bound to happen.

(16,928 posts)I'd estimate that our schools are probably staffed by SUBSTITUTES 10% of the time. It could be less, maybe 5%, or more, maybe 15%.
So, what is the responsibility of the substitute (other than to know that when the kids "sign-in" not all of them are really Donald Duck, George Washington, or Monica Lewinski, no matter what they sign!) - are they to assume the duty of "sharp-shooter" or "guard-on-duty" - and would you do that along with all of the other duties - for as low as $70 a day?
Is the principal supposed to give them a brief "refresher" course - maybe at the shooting range?
Is the Sub supposed to call another teacher for "back-up" in case there's a "situation?"
Yeah, something else that's been well thought out by IQ45 and his band of merry men!

Additionally, couldn't the union negotiate for gun-free rooms?
