Too bad it took god knows how many murdered and wounded children to do it.

My stepdaughter just turned 18 and can't WAIT to vote. Our generation didn't even consider voting until our 30's (and many still don't).

I was living in Philadelphia, and the local old boy corrupt Democratic party machine nominated the loutish police chief, Frank Rizzo, for Mayor. Rizzo used to be proud of his cops being brutal to anti-(Vietnam) war protesters, and even wore a billy club in his cummerbund at formal events. The guy was an unabashed fascist. The Republicans nominated a soft-spoken, moderate administrator to run against Rizzo, and though he lost by a convincing margin, I'm proud to have voted for him (i.e. against Rizzo).

Soon after the election, Rizzo switched to the Republican Party (where he belonged all along, just never would have become mayor in Philadelphia running as one). After that, he hobnobbed with Nixon, and then did a fast fade when it was revealed that he was building a house that cost over ten times his yearly salary, and couldn't explain how he was financing it. Corrupt is as corrupt does.

The Philadelphia Democrats learned their lesson. Let the Republicans nominate oafish corrupt assholes. They are better at it, and they have way more of them.

Needless to say, I never had any reason to vote for a Republican ever again.

I knew McGovern was a lost cause, but was happy to vote for him. I despised Nixon, and couldn't wait to vote against him. I predicted before the 1972 election that Nixon would win, but not finish his term, and either be in jail or resign the presidency by 1976. I got that one right, at least.

Thu Mar 8, 2018, 02:29 PM

Hubert Humphrey really wanted to get out of Vietnam War immediately. However he was forced to defend LBJ's record and that made him the "warhawk" candidate. (He was for peace and getting out of Vietnam.) Eugene McCarthy was truly a peace candidate, and he took enough votes away from Humphrey that neither candidate could win the election.

Nixon the Reptile would say/do anything to get elected, and he claimed he would end the war if he got elected - Nixon became the "peace" candidate. Nixon wins, and of course he doesn't end the Vietnam War he escalates it. "Peace With Honor" was his new rallyng cry and reason for delay, and all the GOP bought it. He was still saying "Peace With Honor" when he ran for re-election in 1972.

The obvious, sad irony to the 1968 election was that Bobby Kennedy would have won, and would have ended the war immediately. But that was not to be.

These are the numbers of voters in Dallas County during yesterdays Texas Primary:

Registered Voters: 1,286,763 Ballots Cast: 132,288 Voter Turnout: 10.28%

10.28% of registered voters is so disheartening considering the current threat to our Democracy-I know I'm preaching to the choir but that is simply unacceptable. Just think what we could accomplish with even moderate partcipation

Democrats need to understand that point. When fewer voters show up, each democratic vote is amplified by multiples.

She was excited to vote, but she wasn't sure who to vote for.

Of course I couldn't really encourage her to vote a particular way (even though I really wanted to). I think back to that and wonder if she has come to any conclusions on her own over the last year and a half.

In 1968, I was a resident of GA but in TN in college. I voted by absentee ballot for Hubert Humphrey. I have never voted for a Republican for President and never will.

I had the opportunity later to discuss the shame of Richard Nixon with an older gentleman who was a friend of the family. Nixon had disappointed and failed him. He was sad. I pointed out that I did not vote for him and he puzzled on how a college student got that right. He was a distinguished person of two generations older than me and did not understand how he judged Nixon in error. I was polite but it was difficult.

The young women coming forward are not going down without a fight when it comes to reproductive rights. In fact, I predict that it's Mike Pence and his like-minded cohorts who will be down and out and bloodied when this new generation of feminists get through with them."

My first vote was for Jimmy Carter. After that, my Republican older Brother talked me into voting for Raygun. He used the typical talking points: Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago?, The hostages!, etc... After that, it was Dems in every election. BTW, after my Brother lost everything to Enron, he voted for the Democrats...
