Dear right wing gun humping dimwits:
Telling teenagers they're all stupid liberal morons for protesting on behalf of their own safety is possible the single most perfect way to make sure that they never ever vote Republican for their entire lives. You are literally telling an entire generation of voters that they're too dumb to talk about politics right at the very moment they're starting to pay attention to politics. They're going to look at which political movement is telling them "Guns are more important than your life" and they're going to remember that forever. And since you foolishly made guns a part of the culture wars, you'll have pushed them all into the arms of the pro-choice, pro-socialism, pro-equality, pro-feminist, pro-gun control left.

Not exactly the best comparison to make for a poster.

(58,724 posts)In my opinion, it should not be similar to the White House in that respect.
The White House is not a good model to use - there are many people with guns all over the White House at all times.
We need fewer guns in schools - period.

(58,724 posts)I think it inadvertently promotes the opposite message of what they are trying to convey.
The White House is teeming with armed guards - that's not how schools should be.
SunSeeker
(51,574 posts)Of course the White House is teaming with security and law enforcement personnel. It is the fucking White House, with a lot of high value targets. Most high schools have a security guard.
As part of the security measures for the White House, no visitor can have firearms. All these kids are saying is that if a visitor gun ban is considered a security measure for the White House, why can't it be a security measure for schools as well?
oberliner
(58,724 posts)in that they should be filled with numerous trained people carrying guns in order to prevent attacks.
The reality is that we need fewer guns in schools, not more. (I would mention that the school in Parkland did have an armed security guard and that did not prevent the attack).
The proposal to arm teachers, for instance, is absolutely insane.
We need to start making it harder for people to get guns. Period. We should follow Australia's lead.

(58,724 posts)I understand the message they are trying to get across - I don't think the poster does a good job of doing it for the reasons I have explained. But I am happy to leave it there. We are on the same page about what actually matters here.

(21,132 posts)I believe the point was that guns are not allowed inside by anyone except for professional trained law-enforcement. I don't believe the comparison was meant to imply they needed to assign agents to take bullets for the students or any other secret-service duty.

(58,724 posts)Schools should not be structured in any way similar to the White House with respect to security.

No where on the sign did it imply that the schools needed to have rooftop snipers.

(2,957 posts)If you think the WH isn't a gun-free zone, then try having a gun on you when you go there for a WH tour. They won't buy your "but-I'm-a-good-guy-with-a-gun" shtick.
The Secret Service has them. But many inside the mansion itself don't carry them. Other than select security team members, people - including the WH staff and their guests - aren't allowed to bring guns on the property.

Young voters have always skewed liberal but turnout has always been the issue.
So keep talking down to them GOP. Their vote will count just as much as yours and you are just assuring how they will use it.

(297,323 posts)into a nra convention, either.. So WHY are they Pushing GUNS in SCHOOLS!????
AllyCat
(16,189 posts)Because death by shootings goes down. The implication was that the presence of guns made death by shooting less likely. They failed to mention that guns are not allowed in the convention.
Cha
(297,323 posts)whole story out.
Whiskeytide
(4,461 posts)... that shooting deaths on the streets went down during a convention because people who fantasize about shooting people were all at the convention.
Your take makes more sense I suppose. And it would not be the first time Ive seen dark humor in republican seriousness.

(58,724 posts)The pro-gun people in fact want to turn schools into the White House and have it guarded by numerous people with guns.
Schools should not have snipers on the roof.

SunSeeker
(51,574 posts)...any more than it is implying that the principal should ride around in a bullet proof limo like the president.
It is simply highlighting thst the White House has a visitor gun ban, indeed even staff can't have guns either apparently. That it is a security measure that schools can and should have as well.
Oberliner, it is really unfair for you to attack these kids as "ill-informed" and making "no sense."
oberliner
(58,724 posts)If they are making the point that such bans ought to remain in place, then I would agree with that. I just think the image creates an impression that a school should be protected in the way the White House, which I would disagree with.
I am not attacking these kids - I am just discussing my questioning of their poster choice on DU. If the kids who created that poster are reading this message, allow me to say how much I admire them and support what they are doing.
ChazInAz
(2,569 posts)You've pounded this into the ground, all the while refusing to see what is actually there. All of your credibility was lost after your third post.
SunSeeker
(51,574 posts)Trump is saying these bans should be lifted, hence the inspiration for posters like this.
Of course these kids are not saying schools should be protected to the extent the White House is. But the Trump was claiming that a gun-free zone is the opposite of a protection. That is why these students pointed out the hypocrisy of such a ridiculous NRA inspired claim. If the White House really believed that gun free zones create danger, the White House would not ban guns from the White House.

(1,822 posts)to people on the right any form of protest is clearly wrong if its people on the left doing it. NFL players silently kneeling, now this. I saw a bunch of posts from RWers on facebook saying instead of walking out go find 17 students and make their day, invite loners to hang out w/ you, etc. I agree they should do that, but why is it an either/or? Why cant they do both?

(43,182 posts)was that the Founders' intent? Does it matter?
Some have made valid points. Founders knew nothing of assault rifles. In 1789 it took 3 months to send an army to invade a country. Today it's a 24 hour event. Events and communication move 90 times faster, but Congress is still elected every 2 years. Lifetime appointments meant 25 years. Now it can mean 60.
Everyone has the right to defend themselves. It's been a principle since Thomas Hobbes. Where everything is a provocation and everyone is armed to the max ....

(34,172 posts)There is some irony in the sign in the OP because Trump wants to surround schools with armed personnel and harden security.
The only reason the WH is actually gun free is more guns and high-level security.
