Breaking: Former AG Ed Meese Signs Letter Supporting Rep. Michele Bachmann

Reagan-era Attorney General Edwin Meese has joined a long list of conservative heavyweights today, in support of Rep. Michele Bachmann’s quest to root out Muslim Brotherhood influence on the US State Department. The letter, signed by Meese along with David Barton, former US ambassador Kenneth Blackwell, Gary Bauer, former Rep. David McIntosh, James Dobson, Star Parker and others, is addressed to Speaker of the House John Boehner. It expresses concern over the criticism that has been levied at Bachmann and other Republican representatives in recent weeks.

“Neither Rep. Bachmann nor Reps. Louie Gohmert, Trent Franks, Tom Rooney or Lynn Westmoreland, in their letter of June 13 to the Inspectors General of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice and the Department of State 1, insulted any individuals nor made antagonistic comments about the Islamic religion. Rather, pursuant to public statements by some of the Obama Administration’s own officials and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) testimony given in U.S. courts 2, they have raised legitimate questions about the ongoing contacts between organizations linked (by our government itself) to Islamism and federal agencies and officials.”

Rep. Eric Cantor, the Republicans’ majority leader in the US House, has also come out defending Bachmann and her group’s inquiry into the possibility that the Muslim Brotherhood, which now is poised to take power in Egypt, is unduly influencing the State Department. Rep. Bachmann has come under fire from Democrats, the media and some Republicans.

But Wedtech had won many of its defense contracts under a Small Business Administration program which allowed minority-owned businesses to be awarded no-bid contracts, despite the fact that Fred Neuberger, not a member of any minority, owned a majority of the company's stock, thus disqualifying Wedtech as a minority-owned business. To keep Neuberger's controlling ownership secret, the company committed fraud, forging papers that claimed Mariotta was still the primary owner of the company.

When Wedtech went public, it gave shares of stock to law firms (as payment for legal services), including Squadron, Ellenoff, Plesent & Sheinfeld. But many of the law firms employed members of the U.S. House of Representatives, including Bronx Congressmen Mario Biaggi and Robert Garcia, who would later be forced to resign their seats due to their roles in the scandal[1][2].

Another key figure in the scandal was Paul Castellano's first cousin, Maj. General Vito Castellano[3] who occupied key capitol positions in Albany, such as the former commander of the New York National Guard and Governor Cuomo's former chief of staff.[4] Vito Castellano pleaded guilty to state charges of tax evasion in connection with payments from the Wedtech Corporation. Indicted on charges of bribing Mr. Castellano was Bernard C. Ehrlich, whom Castellano had promoted to commanding officer of the 42d Infantry Division of the National Guard.[5]

Wedtech then began extending its reach to the White House, utilizing President Reagan's press secretary, Lyn Nofziger, to contact public liaison officer (and future Senator) Elizabeth Dole. Through Dole, Wedtech won a $32 million contract to produce small engines for the United States Army. This was only the first of many no-bid deals that eventually totaled $250 million.
