We all know that Trump loves his Twitter but Facebook is getting all the negative coverage.
I tend to think both were very damaging to our democracy. Twitter may be even easier to manipulate, as for propaganda purposes?
I think all these new social media platforms present a challenge to any open society.

(11,804 posts)It's tricky - giving people the opportunity to communicate and have that communication recorded . . . creates problems. But there are also opportunities to connect with people and ideas that you might not otherwise be exposed to.

(18,837 posts)My sister is a Trump fan and is frikken tethered to Facebook. She doesn't even know what Twitter is.
I handle social media for my clients, and a number of them point out...wisely...that my doing tweets for them would be a fruitless effort, because their core demographic doesn't go anywhere near Twitter. I don't know where the age breaks down, but I think it's safe to assume that people over 50 or 60...unless they are journalists or politicians...don't make up the bulk of the Twitter audience.
So my "uneducated guess" is that a mix of Facebook and Twitter hit voters under 50, while the 50 and over group was primarily influenced by Facebook.
I'm in a small South Carolina town now. Prior to that I spent about 3 years in a small town in Nevada. What I can tell you from my experience is that Twitter was virtually non-existent, while Facebook was the primary force.

(34 posts)Are newspapers, TV stations and radio also threats? Is direct mail a threat? How about those planes at the shore that pull messages along the beach?? We are in dangerous territory when ANY form of media is considered damaging to democracy. Yikes, are we that stupid??
Facebook and Twitter are what you make them in your lives. I get info from both. I especially like the Facebook videos of otters and puppies and my family. What a danger!

People seem to have difficulty distinguishing fact from fiction and their politics are influenced by lies and propaganda to an unknown degree.
Some might argue that FB and Twitter are not what you make them in your life, but what others make them? What do you think of the 13 Russians that were indicted for using Facebook for "other" purposes? Did you read anything about them?
