(54,408 posts)The Republicans would be screaming bloody murder about how unconstitutional this move was, how it was a kommanist plot, and how it was pure unadulterated Soshalism being forced on the poor, unsuspecting good citizens on Pennsylvania.
But, the shoe being on the other foot, the Republicans double standard is in effect.
I have a friend, a rare (nearly extinct) example of a moderate, realistic Republican from South Carolina. The guy is a very successful businessman, travels the world for his work. I don't think he has voted for a Republican since 2015. He is a sane guy, and is smart enough to recognize very quickly someone who is not.

(54,408 posts)His wife is a solid Democrat, and he now has enough money not to care what his tax bracket is. He may not formally switch his party affiliation, but reality has done it for him in all but name.

(15,286 posts)and 2/3rds majority in the state senate. So they have the votes to do it assuming the leadership allows the bill to get to the floor. That could be problematic as House majority leader Dave Reed is currently running for Congress in old PA-9. I doubt he wants these bills to become a distraction to his campaign. Speaker Mike Turzai has his own potential problems. He already has disgruntled constituents over a local issue and he'll face a higher turnout of motivated voters in the parts of his state house district who just got done voting Conor Lamb into office. I doubt he wants to tee off even more voters. In the state senate, Guy Reschenthaler is running for Congress vs Saccone in the primary in the new PA-14, so his vote might not be a given.
Frankly, I think if the GOP would do this and succeed, it would make the midnight pay raise wipeout look like a walk in the park.
Then you have the odious Darryl Metcalfe giving his constituents yet another reason to replace him with someone who is not an out and out kook.
