"Firearms deaths" in the aggregate, which would include suicides and justified killings, such as in self-defense.

I would make a distinction between "He was killed by a gun" and "He killed himself with a gun." Would you agree?

An ER surgeon wouldn't. They're all GSWs regardless of origin.
But I get where you're coming from... the gross denominator doesn't assist particular narratives very well, and distinctions irrelevant to the original statement need to made.

(6,625 posts)The distinction is only irrelevant if the contention is that reducing the number of firearms will reduce the number of suicides as well as homicides. If not, the gross denominator is the irrelevant factor.
