. . . . is in the Russian/Cambridge Analytica FuckingAmerica plot UP TO HIS EYEBALLS.
Facebook has been compromised and weaponized to the harm of the United States.
I think they were willingly used as a tool, not as the plot hatchers.

(19,107 posts)This was a joint effort with FB employees embedded with CA the whole process.
Don't let Facebook or the Trump campaign try to scapegoat CA and then pretend they weren't all working together. The Trump Campaign was Cambridge Analytics, and Facebook was on their team as paid consultants.
It's no wonder Zuckerberg has lied about this so many times, his people were working for the Trump Campaign to facilitate all of this.

(22,920 posts)and, voila, it's obvious why the Internet, as a whole, is a cesspool. (I love the Internet and social media; there's sooooo much potential for good, but it's hard to deny the systems of oppression deeply baked into it as they are in all of our systems.)
I wrote something here in 2015 that I'm going to update in light of Zuckerberg, the Alt-Right/Nazis, Trump, Putin/Dugin, etc., because white supremacy, patriarchy/authoritarianism and exploitative/colonialist greed continue to be at the heart of it all, imo.

(5,403 posts)You made some compelling and, now more than ever, salient points. As a woman, I appreciate your emphasizing this perspective. We can think about the internet now in much the same way as many thought of television in its early days: a tool for tremendous good or enormous evil. The truth, of course, lies somewhere in the middle for both platforms, and, indeed, for almost everything we all encounter every day.

(19,107 posts)Zuckerberg's employees were inside CA helping Bannon develop the propaganda from their data. Zuckerberg's guys were literally helping Bannon and Trump present Nazi propaganda to focus groups and it scored well enough for them to use it to affect the election.
Zuckerberg is nothing more than a greedy twerp who's been a crook from the start, he robbed his business partners at the start of Facebook, he's a crook.

(46,756 posts)He has become a self-perpetuating propaganda machine. How do we re-educate these people? They really do believe that everyone else is to blame for all the bad that has occurred to America, including their bad moods.

(10,202 posts)I must admit to a short time where I fell for, kind of was pushed towards, the propaganda. I was to the point of thinking maybe Trump wont be as awful as he appeared. What with Hillary and Obama saying how dangerous Trump was while kindly and gently stepping aside to let Hitler2.0 rob them of the presidency. I just thought that since they were so willing to give up their obvious win then maybe Trump wont be the horror show I expected it to be. Maybe all the Democratic angst over Trump was hyperbole and merely campaign rhetoric.
But I came to my senses in a couple of months. Actually in a couple of weeks, I was starting to wonder what horror is this. But it took me awhile to extract myself from the reinforced circle of lies. To quit visiting sites that were filled with Russian trolls and Trumpsters....though milder and less racist versions.
So, I have some sympathy for these manipulated souls who have not found their way out of the seductive labyrinth of lies. It requires you to admit you have made a mistake in judgement. You have to be humbled and consider your own falability. And that seems to be very difficult for authoritarian types and lazy thinkers.

(2,078 posts)I am not going to bash you for not seeing through the conman right away.
Obvious to me the guy is a monster trying to kill democracy, but maybe back then one couldn't conceive how fascist his tendencies are.
The R's were supposed to hold him in check too. WTF happened there. There is NO CHECK.
In any event, your story is important to be considered.

(1,752 posts)content - FB does! Not exactly a secret - ?? As someone on NPR stated yesterday, the "product" is not the Facebook platform, its the users and their data - that's where the profit is derived. How exactly were y'all "misled"? I mean this has all been discussed since the very earliest days of FB
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)Anytime you fill out surveys with things like income, political party preferences, product preferences, you are giving away data on yourself. Gatherers of that data use all types of underhanded, BUT legal means to collect that data.

Farmer-Rick
(10,202 posts)They say that they knew they made FB the hot product it was. But they didn't know they and all their friends, without their permission, would be used and targeted like this. Oh they knew ads and commercialization of their data would be common. They didn't think they would be manipulated and fed lies for political purposes.
Though I must say my kids are smarter than the average bear and did realize politicalization was common. They just didn't buy into the ads and crap they got fed. One closed their account and another only uses it for business.
Anyway, I noticed CA maintained that secrecy was paramount. That if people knew they were being manipulated, it would NOT have worked. They do NOT have the right to do this in secret. That is where it is a crime.

(47,567 posts)but I could never have imagined how vast and pervasive this all would become. I suppose that when too many people with no real principles gain power, they could bring down everything it took decades to build, especially if the average person is apathetic.

(31,261 posts)Zuckerberg and Sarah Sandberg are perfect examples of cases where a desire to be viewed as successful override principles. Their histories indicate that they are socially liberal, but their business required that they not deeply examine some organizations that were using their platform.
