How many squares do you see?
I counted 40.

Consider the square to be four units on a side.
4x4 squares - 1
3x3 squares - 4
2x2 squares - 9
1x1 squares - 18 (16 in the 4x4 and 2 extras inside the grid)
half-size squares - 8
1 + 4 + 9 + 18 + 8 = 40

(10,618 posts)...so I have to consciously be very methodical. It comes from all my many years as a computer programmer and learning how to not miss things I would miss if I weren't being so artificially methodical.

(59,305 posts)I counted 31, and saw what others posted, and after 17minutes or so, came to 40. The ones that were hard to me were the bigger squares, of 3x3's....
